Gerald Laird's arrest involved NBA player's wife

Jan 28, 2010, 11:48 AM EDT

Last month Tigers catcher Gerald Laird and his 22-year-old Yankees prospect brother Brandon Laird were arrested while attending a Phoenix Suns game, with initial reports describing their “loud behavior” and how “the Laird brothers allegedly assaulted the security guards” who tried to calm them down.
Gerald Laird insisted afterward that the whole thing was just a misunderstanding, but now the Arizona Republic has some further details. Chief among them is that the entire incident started when the Laird brothers’ 70-year-old grandfather allegedly touched the wife of Celtics player Eddie House “inappropriately” while they were all in the arena’s “lounge” area.
According to the police report Brandon Laird then “shouted derogatory remarks toward House and other women at the lounge before taking a swing at one of the women.” He was charged with suspicion of misdemeanor disorderly conduct, while Gerald Laird was booked on suspicion of misdemeanor assault for allegedly “striking a security guard in the head from behind during the brawl.”
Not surprisingly, the police report notes that the Laird contingent–which also included their father and uncle–were “cautioned by security when they arrived because they appeared intoxicated” before even stepping inside the arena. And naturally Gerald Laird explained afterward that he just wanted to “watch the game and have some fun” and “didn’t try to hurt anyone or strike anyone.”
So, to recap: Just about everyone in the entire Laird family showed up to a Suns-Celtics game drunk and then made their way to an in-arena bar for some more drinking, Grandpa tried to get fresh with an NBA player’s wife, Brandon got angry and turned the harassment level up a few notches, and Gerald sucker-punched a security officer once things got out of hand. Awesome.

I wanna party with those guys.

  2. Dan - Jan 28, 2010 at 12:39 PM

We need to get Miguel Cabrera, the Lairds, Josh Hamilton, Bert Blyleven and Dan Plesac together for a trip to Vegas. That would be awesome.

Grandpa will be happy to hear that.

So Gerald Laird’s grandfather inappropriately touched Eddie House’s wife, who is also the daughter of ex-coach Henry Bibby as well as the sister of Mike Bibby. What a small world.

Why can’t people just get drunk and mellow out? They’re already leading the Life of Reilly. I miss the days of Willis Reed. No security, no police, no arrests, a few hospital bills, and a whole bunch of Lairds laying quietly on the floor.

I am shocked that Laird was able to connect with anything he took at swing at!

what thugs. I guess basketball isn’t the only sport who breds thugs hockey and baseball should be banned.
That leaves us with the NFL, all of whose members are ex-choirboys who always drink their milk and are in bed by 9PM every night so as not to cause their mommies worry. Does the hair on your palms interfere with your typing?

He can hit a woman but no one in that family can hit a baseball. Only a quality guy goes out drinking with his 70 year old perverted grandfather.

  15. Morgan W - Jan 28, 2010 at 3:30 PM

I agree with Papi catching(no pun intended I assure you)more flack. This sort of behaviour from overpaid athletes is not uncommon, but a 70yr old Grandfather??? When I’m that age, I’ll be lucky I know where I am and keep the beer inside my pants long enough to make the bathroom…let alone feel up some guys wife.
Ahhhh genetics. Doing the Laird family proud for generations.

HAHAHAHAHAHAH, 70 year old grandpa, AHHAAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAH!!!

  17. Bewildered - Jan 28, 2010 at 5:03 PM

… & the elder wasn’t arrested for sexual assault?? What if House had grabbed his wife?

  18. I am Providence - Jan 28, 2010 at 6:52 PM

If House had grabbed his wife it would be really creepy, assuming she’s a 70 year old grandma.

It’s unbelievable; a script written by….the author of baja oklahoma. these fellows need to read up on the 10 levels of drunkeness.

For some reason, this reminds me of “Sons of Katie Elder where J. Wayne, D. Martin & E. Holliman Elder are (literally) fighting to save their ranch. Everyone’s kicking everyone’s rear ends and saloons are blown out from all the shootin’!!
How long before the reality show begins??!!

  21. JoeRunner - Jan 29, 2010 at 12:26 PM

I wonder if the MLB site will feature the Lairds on the Families page along with the Boones, Bells, etc.
It doesen’t who granpa left with.

  22. yankee4 - Jan 29, 2010 at 4:20 PM

  23. Electric Beds - Jan 30, 2010 at 7:23 AM

An adjustable bed will raise and lower its head and foot ends. A bed riser will elevate your bed by propping its legs up on blocks. Now wouldn’t it be better to get a hold of these two functions all in just one bed? Of course it is! And you can get it with an adjustable bed riser.

  24. Purnell - Jan 30, 2010 at 11:01 AM

    good one.
    They sound like some bunch.

  25. jim - Feb 7, 2010 at 6:35 PM
