Quote of the Day: Adam Dunn wants to play defense

Jan 29, 2010, 5:45 PM EDT

“Adam really doesn’t want to DH in the American League. He wants to
play the field, and believes his first base defense has reached the
adequate level. He knows he’s no Gold Glover, but believes that he’ll
get better, and is anxious to improve that aspect of his game.”

– Statement of a person “close to Adam Dunn” to MASN reporter Phil Wood.  Wood (and a lot of other people) are reporting today that Dunn and the Nationals are talking contract extension.  If that happens, and Dunn spends the remainder of his productive years cruelly attached to a glove, he will officially pass John Van Benschoten as the most miscast player in recent baseball history.

This reminds me of Nic Cage’s desire to act. Just take the money and sit on the bench please. Think of the children!

Hey, I would like to play defense too. That doesn’t mean that I should.

  3. Scott - Jan 29, 2010 at 8:55 PM

maybe this is obvious, but is Dunn trying to improve his defense, because he thinks he’s going to keep hit 30-40 bombs for the next 5-10 years, and wants to pad his chances at getting into the HOF?

Remember that scene of Corbin Berenson taking infield practice in Major League?
    .
    Oh boy.
    .
Every lefthanded hitter who comes to the plate against the Gnats is going to be trying to pull the ball in the general direction of Dunn. He’s going to be like a human (one assumes) green monster over there at first.
