De nada, but if you haven't already figured this out, Borges is seriously addictive to anyone with a mind in their brain. I can't recommend him even to people whose intelligence I suspect without worrying that maybe I've created a monster.
.
Borges always bellyached that Spanish couldn't do what English could do. I think I read that in an interview with him by Paul Theroux in The Old Patagonian Express. I don't know if you have any Spanish in your craw - living down here in Macondo, in the shadow of the Stupor Bowl, I don't really have a choice about that if I want to get my grass cut or my toilet fixed - but Borges is far better known in the US for his ficciones than for his poetry but yours truly humbly thinks he was one of the greatest poets of the 20th Century. And for all that there has only ever been one, I said one, edition of his poetry in an English translation, and that's been out of print for decades. Dear Buddha. Thank the dharmapalas that I can read Spanish.
.
My alltime favorite Borges line, and I have muchos favoritos, is from Muerte y la brujula, "Death and the Compass." The line is: "From the courtyard there arose the useless cry of a bird."
When you come across it, you will fully understand why its composition was an untrammeled act of genius. When I first came across it, it took my breath away. Of course, we were having our cesspool pumped out that afternoon too, but I think that was merely coincidental.
.
When you're good and hooked, let me know and I'll relate a tale about Borges I was told by another poet who knew him well (a literary equivalent of my recent Mickey Mantle story), one that'll crack you the hell up - but you need a working familiarity with his, uh, take on things to really appreciate it first.

Wow, the Gnats are really stockpiling washedups down there on the farm, aren't they? I always suspected they were cultivating the castoffs for ethanol. But when the team from Washington starts collecting these guys, I'm sure of it. I suppose having George Romero write your energy policy is better than having no energy policy at all.
