Steve Phillips apologizes

Feb 8, 2010, 10:35 AM EST

Thumbnail image for steve phillips.jpgFormer Mets GM and ESPN talking head Steve Phillips was on the Today show this morning, opening his heart about his treatment for sex addiction. No word on if he was angry about being totally overshadowed by Tiger Woods in that department, but there was a lot of remorse and apologies to his family and things of that nature.

Which is good, because for as much as I’ve ripped Phillips in the past, I feel bad for the guy. Not for what he did to himself — he dug his own grave with the job and the publicity and all of that — but for the fact that there’s a really good chance he’s going to lose his family over this and that even if he doesn’t, their relationship will forever be altered. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone, and just because his wounds are self-inflicted doesn’t mean they aren’t wounds.

On a lighter note, the article says that Phillips’ program was an AA-style 12-stepper.  Anyone who knows about those knows that a key part is making amends. And the amends don’t just have to be things the recovering party did while specifically subject to the addiction in question.  Which means that, sooner or later Mets fans, expect Phillips to call you up and apologize to you for the Mo Vaughn, Roberto Alomar, Pedro Astacio, Mike Bordick, Bobby Bonilla, Rickey Henderson, Kenny Rogers, and Jeromy Burnitz deals.

If he’d done a better job as GM, we wouldn’t be stuck with Omar now.

Personally, I like this idea that there’s such a thing as “sex addiction.” That’s right up there with razor-blade sharpening pyramids. And speaking of sharpening razor blades, aside from wondering how the hell his gonadatrophic excesses distinguish Steve Phillips from the rest of this civilization, why didn’t he just have his goddamned balls cut off if he was so totally out of control? Hardly a week goes by when I don’t pass the wall of tabloid imbecility at the checkout counter at Publix where there’s a headline that some idiot tried to do the number on himself?
    .
And really, consider the concentric imbecilities of working for an industry that has been glorifying sexuality and selling the idea that you ain’t shit if you don’t draw chicks like flies – and then getting shitcanned for getting laid.

  3. Jonny5 - Feb 8, 2010 at 11:00 AM

What’s he apologizing for??? The MEDIA and fans should apologize to him imo. We’re sorry to be so intrusive into your PERSONAL LIFE as to have cost you your job Mr. Phillips.

  4. Ryan - Feb 8, 2010 at 11:05 AM

I want to be sent to Sex Addiction treatment! But alas I’m posting on a baseball blog, so clearly I don’t have the required credentials.

  5. Old Gator - Feb 8, 2010 at 11:10 AM

Are you kidding? Compared to Omar, Phillips looks like a combination of Larry Beinfest, Dave Dombrowski and Billy Beane in their primes.
    .
Johnny5: Yeah, I know what you mean. Here I am hoping my arthritis holds off just long enough to let me fumble open my little foil packet of Cialis and I have to listen to this guy apologizing? Fark that.

  6. BC - Feb 8, 2010 at 11:14 AM

Any truth to the rumor that Phillips now has Meredith Viera on his speed-dial?

  7. George Costanza - Feb 8, 2010 at 11:41 AM

HE NEVER APOLOGIZED TO ME FOR EMBARRASSING ME AT THAT PARTY! I WAS COLD AND ALL I GOT WAS A WINDBREAKER!

  8. moreflagsmorefun - Feb 8, 2010 at 11:48 AM

He should have apologized on the View, he would have gotten laid for sure, hey, you never know.

  9. BC - Feb 8, 2010 at 11:53 AM

There’s an obvious joke here involving Tiger Woods, but the possibilities are so endless that I’m having a hard time narrowing things down… A little help here please!

  10. Jonny5 - Feb 8, 2010 at 11:57 AM

One tip, stay off the wellbutrin and the cialis may not be needed. I took the stuff to break a bad habit of smoking while eating cheese steaks and let me tell you……. it was like I was 80 when it came to this topic…. Thank goodness I’m over that.

You took Cialis to quit smoking?

  13. BC - Feb 8, 2010 at 12:08 PM

Hey, that’s pretty cool. Didn’t E.B. White write “Charlotte’s Web”? Loved that book as a kid. Would make a great Tim Burton / Johnny Depp movie. We could get Alyssa Milano to play Charlotte The Spider. Or maybe Catherine Bell.

  14. Old Gator - Feb 8, 2010 at 12:41 PM

You got it. Same guy. I used Elements as my standard style and grammar guide in virtually all of my critical writing classes, although a lot of my students resisted it – it made them lucid, which frequently revealed with uncompromised clarity how vapid they actually were – especially the guys on the football scholarships.
    .
I think that photo of Drew on Craig’s sellout blog (where it supplies a measure of relief that the topic, and Craig’s limping excuses for it – reminiscent of nothing so much as Leo McKern’s confession in the last episode of The Prisoner, I might add – dearly required) definitely sets her up to play a female spider. And we can get Meryl Streep to do the voiceover they way James Earl Jones covered for David Prowse in ), since, as we all know, that whereas Gillian can dance up a storm, Drew can’t act to save her product endorsements.

  15. Jonny5 - Feb 8, 2010 at 1:06 PM

No Wellbutrin you goof!!! LOL!! never needed Cialis. Honestly my wife liked me more when I was on welbutrin. I think it was the lack of late night wake ups I gave her while on it that did it. I mean that is what she told me, but she could be lying……. ;>P

  16. BC - Feb 8, 2010 at 1:18 PM

Ah, so Wellbutrin is the secret. Shoot, wish I knew sooner. Would have saved me a s–tload in alimony….

  17. BC - Feb 8, 2010 at 1:22 PM

Who said anything about Drew’s acting? They could make a movie of her doing 90 minutes of underarm fart sounds and I’d go see it.
And I think Olympia Dukakis would be a better voiceover for Charlotte.

It was Cheater Day on the morning news shows. Good Morning America had Jenny Sanford as a guest.
Sort of the opposite end of the spectrum from Steve Phillips.
I hope CBS and Fox had someone as well.

  20. Bernie - Feb 9, 2010 at 8:41 AM

I’ve never understood his popularity with the media. He ruined the Mets. He picked the Seattle Mariners to finish first 2 years ago so he knows nothing about BB. Everything he says is wrong and now he’s shown to not be a good husband and father. Why do these “celebrities” who get caught cheating suddenly become “sex addicts” as if it’s an addiction instead of a moral weakness. Is it so that we forgive them? He cheated and got caught. Simple as that. His 15 min of fame should be over.

Hey, just asking if you’ve any further information so I can find a little more about it?

  22. Alex Fleming - Feb 11, 2010 at 3:28 PM
