Deep Thoughts: Detroit Tigers

Feb 12, 2010, 10:20 AM EDT

In light of yesterday’s two-year, $14 million offer to Johnny Damon, I had a Deep Thought:  If you’re Dave Dombrowski how on Earth are you supposed to negotiate with players and their agents if they know that Mike Ilitch may just come in and blow the budget whenever it strikes his fancy?

Seems like credibility would, you know, matter a bit in that line of work. And thanks to the team’s owner, Dombrowski has way less of it any time he tells someone that the money just ain’t there.

Something still smells fishy. If the bidding went from $4M, some deferred, for one season from Atlanta on Wednesday, to $14M for two years from Detroit on Thursday, then why is Johnny Damon still unsigned on Friday?? Could it be that the $14M is wrong or that there is a big catch (e.g. IF the Tigers can swing a deal to free up $$).

If he really has a 2 year, $14M deal, why hasn’t he accepted yet? Still bouncing around the Braves and White Sox $4M for 1 offers? This whole scene completely boggles the mind.

Boras is the king of smoke and mirrors. There is the stench of fish.

I just assume that Boras has some dirt on Ilitch. Any time Boras is backed into a corner, he calls ol’ Mike up and reminds him of the pictures / documents / recordings he has of Mike and orders him to the negotiation table.
