Smoltz wants $3 million

Feb 12, 2010, 12:20 PM EDT

Earlier we passed along word that John Smoltz may wait until mid-season to sign someplace. Based on this report from the New York Times, however, Smoltz may be waiting a hell of a lot longer than that, because according to them he wants $3 million.

The seems like an awful lot for a guy who, while he turned it around a bit in St. Louis last year, represents nothing close to a sure upgrade, in-season or otherwise.

I want 3mil also. Smoltz can only throw right handed, but I can code with both hands!

If he’s healthy enough to throw even 100 innings, it’s hard to imagine him not being worth $3 million. His high ERA last year was all BABIP and other forms of bad luck. K/BB rate of over 4. If the Twins wanted to hand his “Veteran Presence” three million, I’d be happy with that.

I wonder if he and Rusell Branyan were sharing the same crack pipe when they came up with their ridiculous amounts of moneys that they wanted.
