Giants owner has his priorities in order

Feb 25, 2010, 8:28 AM EDT

New York Giants uniforms.gifI generally stay out of the Dodgers-Giants rivalry because I really don’t have a dog in the hunt. There are years that I like to see the Giants get the best of the Dodgers and vice-versa. It usually depends on the makeup of the rosters, how it impacts postseason matchups, and whether or not one or the other of them beat up on the Braves that given year.  At present I’m favoring the Giants because of my crush on admiration for Tim Lincecum and the fact that the Dodgers media people are acting like jerks. That could easily change, however depending on how awesome Matt Kemp or Clayton Kershaw decide to be this year or whatever.

But after scanning the newspapers this morning, I may have to go all-in with the Giants. Why? Owner Bill Neukom has made retro-style, orange-striped socks available to his players and strongly encourages their use:

In addition to the standard sanitaries and the all-black socks, the
Giants also made a deluxe version available to their major leaguers
this spring. They’re black with three horizontal orange stripes that
are only visible when their pant legs are worn high.
They’ll be required at Single-A San Jose and other minor league stops that share the Giants’ color schemes.

“I think it’s a great look,” Neukom said. “I think it looks like baseball. I also think it’ll make them faster runners.”

Frank McCourt can have his Chinese soccer team and football stadium in the parking lot. I’d prefer the owner of my team to care about baseball stuff. Especially trivial and wonderful baseball stuff like striped socks.

“I also think it’ll make them faster runners.”

How awesome is that line? None more awesome?

I’d like to amend my previous statement and acknowledge that “orange-lidded caps” may undo much of the awesomeness that is striped stirrups.

It might be all true to the 30’s, but so were swastikas and I don’t think the Braves ought to be breaking those hats out either.

Wearing socks like was prominent among the strange reasons my ex-wife gave me for having headaches. Especially white socks. Or brown ones. She also didn’t like me wearing long sleeved shirts. Or short sleeved ones. So maybe the Giants should leave well enough alone.

I love me some striped stirrups.
My son already asked me for the Cardinals red/white striped stirrups for little league. Ebay, here I come!

Definite plus for Neukom. If I was a billionaire who owned a ball team this is exactly the kind of thing I’d do. But I would also light my cigars with $100 bills, which may be more of a McCourt type thing.

I say they go back to these things:

Did anyone else find it amusing that the road jersys in the picture say New York? For a second there, I thought that the Giants may be leaving.

As a Rockos fan, I can not be a Giants fan, ever ever ever. But I love those retro striped socks!
I may start a Facebook fan page for them!

“Giants Owner” should be plural. Its a group. Neuk is the CEO or as Wiki states: “leader of the San Francisco Giants baseball team ownership group”. What a deal, huh. An issue or dynamic of this group is that they are in part decendants of an original, more keenly interested and deeper pocketed couple.
The socks might look alright. I hate changes to the G uniform though. Well, they needed to change the lettering to ‘San Francisco’- that was okay.
