Kevin Youkilis doesn't have much use for statistical analysis

Feb 26, 2010, 9:28 AM EDT

Youkilis, a guy many people first heard about by virtue of him being prominently mentioned in “Moneyball” — and a guy who plays for arguably the most stat-savvy team in baseball — don’t need no stinkin’ sabermetrics:

“I don’t go off all those UZRs . . . is it UZR?” Youkilis said. “I
don’t even know what it is. I hope my UZR is sick, along with my OBSTR.

“I don’t know how they do it. How do you measure defense? You make
an error, you make an error. You get to a ball, you don’t get to a
ball. What if you have a bad hamstring and you can’t get to a ball up
the line? I don’t know what they evaluate, but a good ballplayer is a
good ballplayer.”

And if I’m the Red Sox I’m perfectly happy with this answer. I want the players playing good defense — which Youkilis manifestly does — and not thinking too hard about how it rates. There are plenty of underpaid analysts on staff to worry about whether Youkilis’ UZR is sick.

SO WHAT??!!! I wanna know why no one has picked up Kiko Calero yet??? Ahem!!!! Philly!!!! Lidge might suck this season….. maybe you should throw an old dog a bone??? Ya know a 1.97 era in 67 appearances isn’t too bad compared to lidges 7. something!!!!!!!

Bill James works for the Red Sox – I wonder if he’s an “underpaid analyst?”

Yes, but he is perfectly happy because he gets to have quality time with Carmine.

Just how Theo likes ’em – dumb as rocks but can swing, throw and field with the best of them.

The pen is still light!!! I have a sinking feeling Moyer is a bust this season, and Kendrick will have to step up to a starting role. And we all know Moyer is no reliever, the old man tosses 100 pitches to warm up. Remember he hurt himself last season from the pen, i think due to not enough time to get warm. I still see the Phills pen as a liability.

I like Youklis he is a tough, gritty, no nonsense player who toughs it out everyday. He is an inspirational leader on his team not through words spoken but action taken, he strikes me as a throwback type of player and I like those kinds of guys no matter who they play for!!!

I agree with Craig. It’s not Youk’s job to worry about his stats. That’s up to the front office, who very wisely did not trade him when they had the chance.

    Youlk is so craZy………
bad hamstring is – BH, WHO DOESN’T KNOW THAT, COME ON…….

  12. Matt M - Feb 26, 2010 at 1:15 PM

Well, Theo trashed UZR on WEEI the other day, so maybe Youk is just sucking up to the boss.

  13. Jack - Feb 27, 2010 at 6:03 AM

    He’s right. UZR is garbage.

  14. Old Gator - Feb 27, 2010 at 9:39 AM

I didn’t know Kevil Youklis could even count.
And it’s steenkin’ sabremetrics, Craig. Steenkin’. That’s the kind of phonetic imperialism that Mexicans most resent about us. Keep this up and you’re gonna have to check your Taco Bell orders for broken glass.
