Great Moments in Strategy: Jim Tracy

Mar 1, 2010, 11:20 AM EDT

Rockies’ manager Jim Tracy is sneaky:

Fifth starter Jason Hammel will pitch in
the team’s Cactus League opener Thursday, facing the Diamondbacks.
Opening-day starter Ubaldo Jimenez will make his first start Friday
against the Angels rather than pitch against the Giants that same day.

“That is by design,” Tracy said, not wanting to give San Francisco any unnecessary looks at his ace.

Given that (a) in his career, Ubaldo Jimenez has pitched more innings against the Giants than any other team; and (b) the Giants probably spring for the Extra Innings package, I’m guessing they’ll survive without seeing him pitch some meaningless early March game in Tucson.

Perhaps he feared that the Jints were concealing weapons of mass destruction!

I don’t see the point in that either. If the Giants really want to see Jimenez, they could just send scouts to one of his games and get video of him for their hitters. It’s not a bad idea, but it is kind of pointless.

I imagine it has less to do with “seeing him pitch” than with actually having Giants hitters taking at bats against him and experiencing his pitching firsthand.
Watching video or reading a scout’s description is not the same thing.

Wow, 4 days into full squad workouts and you are already this snarky and cynical, Craig?
You won’t make it to July with this attitude bub.

Yeah, but he’s letting the D’Backs see Jason Hammel. Dumbass Tracy.
