Quote of the Day: Darryl Strawberry on Jason Heyward

Mar 3, 2010, 1:15 PM EDT

“He has a tremendous amount of confidence in himself. That’s a big part of this game. If you believe in yourself, you can
excel. He has a good idea about what the game is all about. He’s going
to go through some highs and lows. That’s just what the game is all
about for everybody.”

Here’s hoping Heyward’s “highs” are of a different sort than those Strawberry experienced when he was a young man.

Strawberry also said that Heyward has some pretty good speed.

There will be rocks in the road, he’ll just have to take his best crack at it and hope he gets some good hits.

    ZING!
    Great work with the tag….

That’s low, leave the Straw alone, he’s suffered enough.

    .
Au contraire. Let’s hope his lows are different. Straw hit bottom often enough to sub for a cesspool pumper.
    .
On the other hand, maybe Heyward will wind up the hero of an apocryphal Mad Dog Russo voiceover in the next pointless remake of The Bad Lietenant.

I love Darryl. I became a Met fan in 1982 and 1983 when the team was terrible, and it was in large part due to his arrival. But I will not lay off of him. He and Doc drank and snorted away at least one more title, if not many. I’m happy to see he seems to have straightened his life out and I met him at Shea during the final weekend of games there in 2008. Very nice man. God bless him.
But you damn sure better know he deserves to get picked on. He was a dope. One wonders if Heyward will even get a sniff of the heights Darryl reached. Whether he can smack the ball like him. And whether he can handle the occasional booze…I mean boos.

    .
    I was there.
