The fruits of monopoly: Topps needs Photoshop lessons

Mar 5, 2010, 4:15 PM EDT

Take some time to look at this new Cliff Lee card from Topps and tell me if you see anything wrong with it:
Cliff Lee card.pngAnd no, it’s not just the fact that he has never pitched a game for the Mariners. You figured they’d Photoshop that. It’s the poor job they did that irks. I mean, why would the Mariners be honoring Harry Kalas with a patch on the upper right side of their jerseys?

(golf clap to Crossing Broad for first noticing this)

    That’s the left side, homey.

  2. Craig Calcaterra - Mar 5, 2010 at 4:29 PM

It’s our right. I’m directing the viewer to look at the pic, not pretend that they’re Cliff Lee wearing the shirt and looking down.

  3. Jonny5 - Mar 5, 2010 at 4:31 PM

LOL!!! He is still wearing the HK patch, even the Phillies aren’t anymore. Damn, he must really wish he was back in Philly……

  4. Matt - Mar 5, 2010 at 4:57 PM

Not to mention the picture looks like its taken from Citi Field judging by the outfield wall ad.

  5. Stone - Mar 5, 2010 at 5:07 PM

I thought it was the ball seemingly headed for the 15th row in the stands. But maybe he’s throwing a really biting sinker.

“It’s our right. I’m directing the viewer to look at the pic, not pretend that they’re Cliff Lee wearing the shirt and looking down.”
So to us viewers Cliff Lee is a right handed pitcher?

to be fair, it looks to me like Uni Watch noticed this a few hours before Crossing Broad

“So to us viewers Cliff Lee is a right handed pitcher?”
So to a batter, the pitch doesn’t come off a lefty’s hand from the right?

  9. Paul - Mar 5, 2010 at 9:32 PM

It comes from a lefty’s hand’s left from the right if you are talking about the batter’s POV.
Candy coat it however you want but the badge is on Cliff’s uniform’s left side. To differentiate most would say “Camera right”. If you want to roast Topps, and rightly so, then you need to get it right.a

Still, Craig’s construct is awkward at best. It makes much more sense to call it the left side of the jersey. The average human brain can figure out that finding the left side of the jersey involves looking at the right side of the card.
    .
The patch is on the left side of the jersey. That’s just a fact. It doesn’t float around of its own accord to accommodate the viewer’s perspective.

And by the way, what the hell is the deal with the wildly varying delay times on comment posts? It is now 9:50 pm. I submitted something at least 12 minutes ago, and it has yet to show up. Weak.

People are really getting worked up over right vs left? Really? Why not just say, check the big friggin’ Phillies’ Harry Kalas memorial patch on Lee’s jersey?
