Milton Bradley, Jim Hendry, and Britney Spears

Mar 11, 2010, 11:40 AM EST

Milton Bradley has made headlines lately for basically refusing to stop talking about how miserable he was in Chicago, but did have some nice words for one member of the Cubs:

I have nothing bad to say about Jim Hendry. He gave me $30 million. God bless Jim Hendry and his family.

Most of the stuff Bradley says makes me roll my eyes and Cubs fans obviously have a much harsher reaction, but he has a point here. Bradley’s abrasive personality and various other issues shouldn’t have surprised anyone last year because he’d already worn out his welcome with six other teams in nine seasons, yet Cubs general manager Jim Hendry still handed him a $30 million deal.
Fans, media members, former teammates, and ex-coaches have been ripping Bradley to shreds, and rightfully so in most cases, but lost in all that is the big-league GM who gave $30 million to an emotionally unstable, oft-injured outfielder with a lengthy track record of issues and incidents. Bradley was being Bradley, but in theory at least Hendry should have known better.
If you pay $500 for tickets to a Britney Spears concert and she spends two hours lip-syncing terrible songs while prancing around in outfits that no longer fit you can certainly boo her off the stage and then complain for the entire car ride home, but ultimately what did you expect when you paid $500 for tickets to a Britney Spears concert. Hendry knowingly paid $30 million for the Milton Bradley experience and the Cubs certainly got it.

Why don’t we give Hendry more heat for his moves than we do? The Moore’s, Sabean’s and Minaya’s of the world can make some room for Hendry. Soriano, Fukudome, Bradley… the list goes on. Hendry is starting to make a name for himself in the craptastic signings category too.

  2. mcgatman - Mar 11, 2010 at 12:16 PM

so you went to that concert also, Aaron?

  3. Marianne - Mar 11, 2010 at 12:50 PM

Whatever. The Britney Spears concert is worth it. Your opinion is null and invalid, as always.

  4. Jamie - Mar 11, 2010 at 12:51 PM

Hendry built up a lot of good will on some trades he made 5-6 years ago (Lee, Ramirez, Nomar), but I have to assume that good will has finally run out. It’s not the giant idiot mistakes you listed that bug me the most, it’s stupid things like giving multi-year/multi-million $ contracts to every no-hit utility infielder and veteran middle reliever that comes along.

I gotta disagree with you Marianne. As the father of a teenage daughter (now 16), I was dragged to a couple of Brittany Spears concerts. (Although I am ashamed to admit so publicly). Not only is she completely overated as a musician, and she does lip-sync, not sing at her concerts, but she is a moral failure, not a idol or role model. Her lifestyle, awful parenting skills, substance abuse problems and lets say lack of moral character (remember the photos of a her ***** that circulated a while back?) make her very much like the athletes who kids look up to, only to be sadly disappointed when their heros are exposed (Sorry for the pun Brittany) as drug users, cheaters or in the case of Bradley, brooding, excuse making, selfish babies. I think Aaron got this one exactly right!

  7. hello - Mar 11, 2010 at 2:33 PM

peteinfla being a good role model to your daughter is your job jackass.

  8. crush - Mar 11, 2010 at 3:09 PM

i would pay much more than $500 to go see a britney spears concert.shes a entertainer, and shes great at what she does wheather she lip syncs or not i thourohly enjoy her.

How Britney Spears became famous again is a mystery to me. Maybe the new biography “Britney Spears: Little Girl Lost” will explain how a lip-synching pop diva can crawl out of the ashes. I guess I’ll just have to read it to find out.

…makes me miss the spam posts.

  11. Emilio - Mar 11, 2010 at 3:35 PM

    To borrow from Chris Crocker…
    Leave. Britney. Alone.

  12. David - Mar 11, 2010 at 5:51 PM

First of, at least have the decency to spell Britney Spears’ name correctly.
I don’t see how you can comment on Britney’s life, based on what you see/read in magazines/newspapers (do you honestly believe all the crap that is reported about Britney?). And for your information, you as a parent should be the one raising your kids and teaching them, not Britney. And she has said she never wanted to be a role model.
Let’s just see, a SOLD OUT World tour which people that paid good money knew she lip syncs, still went out to see her. And during the recession. Britney clearly knows how to entertain and put on a show, otherwise people wouldn’t have bothered going.
So leave the Britney hate to yourself.

  13. Josh - Mar 11, 2010 at 6:41 PM

Hate to disagree, Aaron, but Britney Spears’ lip-synching act is EXACTLY what people pay to see. NOBODY wants to see Milton Bradley’s bullshit, crybaby act…and never did! Yours is what we call “a false analogy.” Hendry? Moron. Bradley? Not paid to be an asshole. Sorry, AG.

It’s so funny how all celebs nowadays want publicity by mentioning Britney, yeah just the first name. lol.when they go to britney’s concert, they expected lip syncing already, people s willing to pay few hundred bucks to see her and the fantastic performances. OH and her recent tour grossed one of the best of 2009.The tour was sold out @ so many stadiums. So STFU already and do ya thing. let people do their things . stop talking shit bout other just to give u publicity.

Wow, I wouldn’t have guessed this site had so many readers who were 12 year old girls.

  17. John - Mar 12, 2010 at 12:29 PM

Britney conserts are always better than any other conserts, its not just a consert but a spectical that makes it different than anyone else. Her last world tour was a fucking travelling circus, you cant get more original than that.

  18. bil - Mar 13, 2010 at 2:12 PM

Just another lame excuse to bash Britney.

  19. NOOBA - Mar 15, 2010 at 5:43 PM

The Britney fans are out to prove that Chris Crocker wasn’t one of a kind — there are lots more out there that don’t (fortunately) have access to a video camera. So they hang out here instead.
