Jay Bruce: Red Menace

Mar 17, 2010, 5:45 PM EDT

Like me, friend of the blog The Common Man laments the lack of good nicknames in baseball these days.  And like me, he likes beer.  Putting those two things together has led him to bestow the nickname “Red Meance” on Reds’ outfielder Jay Bruce.

It’s a more in-depth and nuanced appellation than the mere reference to the Reds might make it seem. Highly recommended reading.

First of all, you misspelled “Menace”. Second, I hope he’s right about Jay. And third, it’s an even more fun name when you connect the beer and Lenin to the team that briefly changed their name to Redlegs during the McCarthy Era.
Captcha = “Bar cuddled”. How appropriate.

Wouldn’t that be a much more appropriate nickname for Aroldis Chapman?

I was thinking Starlin Castro (I’m from New England and we don’t pronounce Rs much unless they begin syllables or are doubled).
