The Rays Republic

Mar 22, 2010, 12:30 PM EDT

Who says you gotta move the Rays out of the AL East? They’re fitting in just fine. WEEI’s Alex Speier just passed along this quote from Joe Madden:

“The Red Sox have got the
Nation. The Yankees have the universe. We’ve created The Rays Republic.”

I like it! But why stop there?

How about the Cubs Constitutional Monarchy!  The Athletics Anarchy! The Mariners Military Junta! The Diamondbacks Demarchy! The Giants Gerontocracy would actually be pretty appropriate for that team. As would the Dodgers Kelptocracy. The Orioles Oligarchy! The Twins Timocracy!  The possibilities are endless!

Wait, that’s not true. We can pretty much stop this nonsense any time now.

Craig, it’s “Twins Territory.” Come on; I expect you to be up on these things.

I think it’s more like the A’s Apathy.

  3. BC - Mar 22, 2010 at 12:53 PM

How about the Mets Merde? (That’s Fraaanch for those of you playing at home).

Craig, you got it wrong. It is clearly the “A’s Anarcho-Syndicalist Commune” whereby players and fans alike take it in turns to be a sort of executive officer for the week.
    I can’t believe you missed that…

    [hangs head in shame]

  6. Simon DelMonte - Mar 22, 2010 at 1:28 PM

Mets Bizarro World! (Me am do opposite of everything Yankees do.)

  7. Richard Dansky - Mar 22, 2010 at 2:02 PM

Strange reporters lying in blogs is no basis for a system of nicknames.

    Can’t help myself: Mets Mediocriciti

  9. BC - Mar 22, 2010 at 2:05 PM

Could also be the Mets Morass, I suppose…

  10. Mike - Mar 22, 2010 at 2:19 PM

    Braves Bureaucracy!

  11. Rays fan - Mar 22, 2010 at 3:06 PM

“Rays Republic?” Does that mean they can build a new stadium using tax dollars and not be guilty of taxation without representation?

  12. BC - Mar 22, 2010 at 3:43 PM

Stadium funding was probably attached to the Healthcare Bill. Gotta read the fine print.

  13. JayT - Mar 22, 2010 at 4:23 PM

I nominate the “Brewers Banana Republic”.

  14. Nick Whitman - Mar 22, 2010 at 4:53 PM

Are you allowed to saddle your fanbase with an obnoxious nickname when you can’t even get people to come to the games?

  15. Old Gator - Mar 22, 2010 at 10:44 PM

    Feesh Terrene.
In Spanish, that’s Terreno Pescado, or perhaps more succinctly, Los Pescadores.
