The Mets are shopping Gary Matthews Jr. Good luck with that.

Mar 24, 2010, 10:22 AM EDT

Joel Sherman reports that the Mets are trying to trade Gary Matthews, Jr. and that the Reds are “a possibility.”

Sherman thinks this could be evidence that Carlos Beltran may be back quicker than people realize, thus making Matthews redundant. Competing possibility: The Mets are just now realizing that they foolishly traded a more-than-decent reliever in Brian Stokes for a guy who can’t hit and can’t really play defense anymore and are trying to undo it.

Oh, and perhaps Sherman’s sources should read more HardballTalk, because if they did they’d know that people with the Reds have said the team has “zero interest” in Gary Matthews, and cited multiple outfielders in their camp that they’d rather have make the team than him.

Apart from that, though . . .

Maybe they can pull a Wakefield and convert him to pitcher? He’d be our 4th starter.

Maybe they can put him on eBay? Or does that violate the Collective Bargaining Agreement?
Better yet, fire Minaya and make Matthews GM. It’d be an upgrade, and you’d be getting something for you money…

Maybe you should be more positive BC?

The last 3 years of Mets baseball has drained me of all positive energy.
Hey, maybe I should get one of those bracelets the Phillies are wearing…

Can he pick lettuce? I hear that new security fence system has been pretty effective. There must be work for him in the Imperial Valley.

My only surprise is that they realized it now instead of after giving him 250 AB’s of .250/.305/.385.

a guy who can’t hit and can’t really play defense anymore
You forgot “and whines when he doesn’t get enough playing time for his liking.”

It is funny (but not funny) that is your attitude also, my brother is a DIEHARD Mets fan and he tells me the same thing every year “we are not going to be the punchline of all the baseball jokes this year, we are going to win it all”. I tell him the same thing every year…… O.K.

why trade him? The Halos are paying him $23 million to sit on the Mets bench?
