Mariners waive Garko in favor of Mike Sweeney

Mar 30, 2010, 8:26 PM EDT

sweeney-mike-100330.jpgThe Seattle Mariners might not win the AL West this season, but they will have the best damn chemistry in the history of baseball, even with Milton Bradley patrolling the clubhouse looking for signs of disrespect.

As Jon Paul Morosi of Fox reports, the Mariners have waived first baseman Ryan Garko, opting instead to keep Mike Sweeney as the terrific guy/Bradley babysitter/Griffey practical joke partner/1B/DH platoon man.

Garko is a 29-year-old right-hander who historically crushes left-handers, seemingly making him a solid platoon partner with Casey Kotchman at first base. So it seems puzzling that the M’s would waive him to instead keep a 36-year-old guy with a history of injuries, no matter how likable he is.

But Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times makes a pretty good case for the move.

Garko apparently was terrible in the field this spring, to the point where Kotchman was playing first base even against lefties. Plus, Sweeney appears to have found the Hot Tub Time Machine and teleported back to, oh about 2000, smashing everything within reach and making him a better candidate to share DH duties with Griffey.

Since Sweeney wasn’t on the 40-man roster, they needed Garko’s spot, thus the decision to waive him instead of sending him to the minors.

Either way, it probably won’t make much difference for the Mariners. They’re still going to struggle scoring runs no matter which of their middling 1B/DH candidates they throw out there. So I guess they decided to go with veteran chemistry, which Sweeney can still provide even after his back goes out in mid-May.

It won’t make any difference who they keep , Milton will cause trouble. If the guys white , he’ll be a racist , if he’s black, Milton will call him an Uncle Tom. There’s no way to babysit Milton, he’ll find fault with Jesus Christ.

Ah, the first “That guy is still in the league?!” of the season is always the sweetest…

I’m a Royals fan, and I have to say it, Sweeney’s a fraud! Sweeney’s contract with Royals was the worst contract in the franchise’s history! I believe he recieved about 50 million and refused to retire after if was obvious he could never stay off the disabled list! He insisted that he was the Captain of the team and his uniform should bear a capital “C”! It made me want to puke! (Hey, Mike: George Brett, Hal McRae, Amos Otis and Frank White didn’t need to have “C” sown on their uniform!!! They were REAL CAPTAINS!)Sweeney TRULY believes he’s a great guy, maybe a SAINT! But Mike is a FRAUD! This guy should have retired years ago, but he will never go away as long as some team is willing to pay him for being a GREAT GUY, sitting on the bench!

That’s so weird that you Royals fans hate Sweeney so much, because he’s been absolutely fantastic for the Mariners and I would have been really sorry to see him go. I have to believe you if multiple people post highly negative perceptions, but I never would have guessed it, based upon what we’ve had since last season with him in Seattle. I guess that gives me some false hope that the same might be said about Milton Bradley in Seattle when the recriminations continue to roll in from Chicago. And Texas. And San Diego. And LA. And Cleveland. And Montreal. Okay, maybe that’s asking too much.

Hahaha this idiot from kansas city is really hating on sweeney??? Lol he’s like the only bright spot in the royals franchise in the past 20 years. Aside from Greinke obviously recently… But come on man be for real. Sweeney did work for the royals!!

Everything you say about Sweeney might be true , but with Milton on the team, Sweeney will be like the second coming of Christ.

Doesn’t “waive Garko” sound a lot like reCaptcha wrote this headline?

Sweeney acted like and believed he was “the second coming of Christ” a surprising amount of the time in KC.
