Quote of the day: Mike Pelfrey, punching bag

Mar 30, 2010, 10:05 AM EDT

Mike Pelfrey headshot.jpgIt’s only 10am, but hang with me here. Jeff Francoeur just appeared on the “Boomer & Carton Show” on WFAN in New York and he unveiled an interesting strategy to get Mike Pelfrey to step up his intensity this season:

I think what I’m going to do before each start is just go up and just
punch him in the face.

Knowing Frenchy, he would probably just swing and miss, only to punch Jose Reyes in the thyroid, so a pinch-hitter is probably in order here.

(Thanks for MetsBlog for the heads up)

Frenchie doesn’t have the discipline to wait for Pelfrey to show up. He’d just take a swing at the first pitcher he saw that day.

    Francoeur is a chipwich.

Well played! I guess we’ve indirectly turned Jeff Francoeur into the punching bag.

Ah, you people have no history in your bellies. Remember the way that shoe polish in the cap trick the Bums played on Kirk Gibson in spring training in 1988 backfired…into a bunch of World Series rings? It’s a good thing when a key team member becomes belligerent and irrational. Someone like that can spur a team on to play well over its head, even if out of nothing more than raw fear. Just ask the Cubs (and, about a week into the season, the Mariners).

I don’t think this will do much for Pelfry, but it might work wonders on the Wilpon/Minaya relationship. Every time Minaya goes to propose a trade/acquisition they have Frenchie punch him in the face and ask “are you sure.” The process continues until Minaya changes his mind or gets knocked out. Either way it’s a win-win for Mets fans. When was the last time something was any kind of a win for a Mets fan?

    1986.

Isn’t that sort of behaviour part of the hiring process with the Mets these days? ‘Frenchie’ forgot to mention ripping his shirt off first.

I’ll take 2000 as a win. Won the pennant, lost to a better team in the World Series. I’d sure as %@#^%!! settle for that now.
