Roy Halladay, Denard Span have tough first innings today

Mar 31, 2010, 2:15 PM EDT

UPDATE: Denard Span tweets that his mom is doing OK.

Spring training is winding down poorly for a couple of players. In the space of about 15 minutes:

  • The Twins’ Denard Span smacked a foul ball into the stands that hit his own mother, who was sitting just above the dugout.  Mom seems to be OK — she wanted to stay at the game but left to go to the hospital for tests — but you have to figure Span is going to be grounded for a while.

And with that news, I think spring training has gone on quite long enough, thank you.

He beaned his mother??? I only wish Freud had been there to watch his entire system implode into rubble.

Sorry, to hear about his mother getting hit, hope she is o.k. It would probably be a good idea Denard to make dinner reservations at one of the local FINE dining establishments of the area and make sure Mom gets the ROYAL treatment. Otherwise your regular season may be worse than today if you can imagine that.

But he beaned her with a ball, which was hit with a wooden bat…

As long as we’re cool with Freud references, surely this was crying out for an Oedipus headline. Except I guess that was his father that the discus hit.

This guy threw at his own kid in a father/son game.
