Jose Reyes to begin season on disabled list

Apr 1, 2010, 10:40 AM EDT

Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com reports that Jose Reyes will begin the season on the disabled list “despite feeling great making a headfirst slide into second base while playing against minor leaguers Wednesday.”
According to Rubin “team officials have concluded out of caution that Reyes ought to work into baseball shape deliberately and not be rushed for Opening Day” after missing three weeks of spring training because of an overactive thyroid.
Because the Mets can backdate his trip to the disabled list Reyes would be eligible to return on April 11, although there’s certainly no guarantee he’ll be ready to do so by then. Reyes’ last regular season game was May 20, 2009 and “he barely left his house while under the doctors’ orders to remain inactive.”
Veteran utility man Alex Cora is slated to start at shortstop in Reyes’ absence, while Daniel Murphy is out for 2-6 weeks with a knee injury and both Carlos Beltran and Kelvim Escobar have already been placed on the disabled list, so amazing as it may seem 2010 is quickly looking a lot like 2009 for the Mets.

You know, I’m beginning to wonder if “thyroid” isn’t just a euphemism for something else, and whether his problem isn’t excess testosterone more than it is thyroxin. This is a problem a lot of ballplayers cloned with frog DNA have in the spring. Anyway, they say Johnny Mathis’ road manager used to have to lock him in his hotel room for the same reason, although I suppose Jose’s tastes are a wee bit more conventional. Now if it is his thyroid, if he’d stick to beer and stop drinking iodine straight from the bottle, the stupid gland would calm down in a hurry. If it’s the other thing, well, take away the swimsuit issue and don’t let him near a pond. Everything will be fine by May.

    Thank God for NASCAR….

Jose Reyes on the DL. In related news, a bear pooped in the woods.

Why even make such a ridiculous comparison? Murphy sprained his knee. Big deal. Not a huge component of this lineup anyway. All the NY sports writers say they should give Reyes a few more days to get back into shape and its a long season so why rush him. Nothing new on Beltran and Escobar. Beltran will be back, no one cares about Escobar.
Its not even close to 2009 and the comparison is completely ridiculous.

God and NASCAR, the hillbilly elixir. Throw in Wal-Mart and you’ve got the trifecta.
