Red Sox' Junichi Tazawa to have Tommy John surgery

Apr 1, 2010, 11:03 AM EDT

Rob Bradford of WEEI tweets that Red Sox reliever Junichi Tazawa is going to have Tommy John surgery on Tuesday, thus ending his season.

Tazawa had a a 2-3 record and a 7.46 ERA last year but, as D.J. noted the other day, he was 9-5 with a 2.55 ERA in 20 starts between AA and AAA last season and looked poised to become an important part of the Red Sox’ nutritious breakfast. If that’s to happen now, however, it will happen in 2011 at the absolute earliest.

Craig, I’ll just repeat what I thought was a fascinating question I posed a few dozen blogs south of here (all my questions are fascinating, not least because they constitute an admission that there’s something I don’t know, which is a rarity in itself). Namely: does anyone keep stats on which spring training seasons have been the most disastrous in terms of ballplayer injuries and the total population of the DL when the season opens?
    .
Yeah, I know the exertions of spring are brutal on ballplayers who’ve been vegging and pigging out all winter anyway. But boy, it sure seems to me like this one has been a veritable orgy of self-immolation. Rotator cuffs, elbows, knees, ribs, thyroids, gonads, dumb accidents, epiphanies – they’re dropping like toads who tried to get it on in a chlorinated swimming pool (and by the way, if you lived in Macondo this would not be an extenuated metaphor).
    .
So does anyone know how this spring compares to the morbidity charts from prior springs? Inquiring minds need to know, and lethargic minds will be passively grateful to them.

I hope gutless Beckett joins him with the surgery, after the spineless sob stings the sux for 70 million, they deserve each other.
