The double-negative is an irreplaceable aspect of folk wisdom, and it has passed directly from there into the political punditry of Fox News, giving you some idea of just how important a trope it really is.

And I’m pretty sure that the comment about folk music being so bad etc. is actually in the preamble to “Folk Song Army” on That Was the Year that Was: “Remember the war against Franco / That’s the kind where each of us belongs / Though he may have won all the battles / We had all the good songs.” And other classic comments; not a bad line in the entire tune. Not many on the whole record, matter of fack, especially “Some have harsh words for this man of renown / but some think our attitude should be one of gratitude / like the widows and cripples of Olde London Towne / who owe their large pensions to Werner von Braun,” which brings us back to the topic of what a horrifying spring it has been for the DL. I also like “Once der rockets go up who cares vhere they come down….” which will be highly appropriate, methinks, to the animadversions of the Feesh bullpen this year.

Gator, that’s the kind of folk saying that makes little sense. Do they mean it’s more than half full, or less than half full?

It kind of reminds me of Tom Lehrer’s theory “that the reason most folk songs are so bad…is that they were written by the PEOPLE”, which is prelude to his memorable “Clementine”, in which various types of professional composers do their thing with the clunky old song–opera, beatnik, etc., culminating with “for a rousing finale, one can always count on Gilbert & Sullivan, full of words and music and signifying…nothing”. The latter seems especially appropriate for Sunday Night Baseball in 14 hours or so, full of full-of-himself Joe Morgan and signifying…

I almost can’t read these DL reports anymore. They’re all starting to fuse together and look like virtual Vietnam era body bags. Maybe it’s just that I’ve ignored baseball blogs in aeons past but this spring seems to have been an orgy of self-immolation. There’s an old folk saying, “Hell ain’t half full.” Maybe not, but the DL must be getting pretty close.
