Well…I’m a diehard Red Sox fan, and I’ll always remember Schilling for what he did in ’04 (and the bloody sock was real, for christ’s sake) but the thought of him as an ESPN analyst is pretty painful…

Let’s do a flashback to the Trading Deadline of 2000. Curt Schilling was the Phillies Ace and everyone in baseball knew he would never sign a long term contract so he was being shopped all year long.
The Curt Schilling of 2000 wanted nothing more than to be a New York Yankee. But the Phillies wanted Andy Pettite in the trade. It was essentially going to be a straight up deal, Schilling for Pettite and the Yankees said no.
Let’s all imagine what the next decade of baseball would have been like had New York made that deal and we landed Schilling instead of Pettite.
The Diamondbacks never make the playoffs in 2001 and the Yankees beat the Braves in the Series after September 11th. Come on, everyone knew it was Yankee destiny to win that year but Schilling not being on the team frakked it all up.
And “Cowboy Up” becomes “Come Back Shane” in 2004 because there is no Schilling pitching for the Red Sox as he leads the Yankees to their 29th title and we’re spared that dumb ass bloody sock. And that second Red Sox title in 2007 doesn’t happen.
Had the the Yanks just traded Andy Pettite to the Phillies for Curt Schilling in July of 2000 they would have had at least two more World Series Titles and, what I think is far more important, the Red Sox would still be living in baseball purgatory as we zero on in 100 years since their last title.
So, if you are a Yankee fan, no matter how much you love Andy Pettite (and there is a lot to love about him) knowing what you know now, would you send him to the Phillies for Schilling if it meant no Diamodack or Red Sox titles?

Ok, what is exactly is the purpose of your post? It brings nothing even slightly interesting to the conversation, indidcates you have no opinion or clue, and is just a mean spirited attack on people voicing an opinion ot their own. And this sure as heck isn’t going to bring me back, either. As Alex said, we don’t need more of the Red Sox view, just as we don’t need any more Yankee viewpoint. If they want to hire someone from the ’01 D-backs, though, that’s fine, so long as it’s Luis Gonzalez.

You don’t have to listen to him. Simply don’t put it on. I am not saying I am a fan of Schillings politics (I’m not). But he has an outstanding resume (3 world series) and an insiders view of the game. And he is not politcally correct. He will call it as he sees it, right or wrong. I’d rather listen to him than some robot saying what people want to hear or to just save his job.

Wow, for a minute I thought he was gonna join the already awful broadcast crew with Joe Morgan. I was trying to figure out how they were going to get both oversized, self important egos into the booth at the same time. Thankfully, he is only going to be in studio pregame for now. No one watches ESPN anyway – Thank God for MLB-TV!

Your 100% correct. This guy should be long gone and forgotten. I don’t think any of his former teammates had any use for him either. He was always a back stabber, and it was always all about him. I, for one will not watch ESPN when he’s on. That was a match made in Hell, Schilling and the Red Sux.

This is just what ESPN needs more crap from ex-player that truely doesn’t know his ass from third base. It is a shame Schilling can’t get the Boston to pay him another 10 million not to pitch. Of course, the main criteria for any ESPN baseball “analyst” is whether or not he can keep his pants zipped. My guess is Schilling will go with the ESPN tradition of not.

If they let him go all Barkley, great, it could work. Every good show needs a heel. My guess, though, is that they’ll keep him in the traditional “Player X just knows what it takes to win” kind of commentary, which just won’t work.
