Former Nats pitcher Mike Bacsik is a racist

Apr 26, 2010, 9:12 AM EST

Mike Bacsik.jpgRemember Mike Bacsik? He was the guy who served up home run number 756 to Barry Bonds back in 2007. Back in January he was accused by former teammate Tim Redding of grooving the pitch to Bonds, which caused a minor dustup. Bacsik came out of that looking OK, though, because it turns out that Redding has often been a jerk to teammates and, hey, Bacsik is just some ex-pitcher trying to make a living on the radio.

Turns out that Bacsik is the bigger jerk, however, as yesterday he tweeted the following after the San Antonio Spurs beat the Dallas Mavericks: “Congrats to all the dirty Mexicans in San Antonio.”  The tweet was almost immediately deleted, but nothing ever dies on the Internet.

A lot of people thought Bacsik served up the homer to Bonds in an effort to make a little living for himself out on the memorabilia circuit. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that he’s not going to be invited to sign “Mike Bacsik #756″ on worthless baseball cards anytime soon.

How can you claim someone is racist based off that one tweet? He didn’t even say anything that bad. If someone wrote “Utah Jazz won tonight, so all the boring Mormans can sleep easy” or something regarding whites as “crackers” would you say he was a racist then? Exactly, you wouldn’t. Stupid. I hope he sues your ass for this. Racism is a serious thing and this isn’t an example. Clearly he was mad the team he wanted to win didn’t and made a dumb “Tweet” out of spite. He’s never shown any other signs of racism before.

Hey Craig…. You know what…. this is America and anyone can say whatever he or she feels like saying. You don’t have to like it. When the media starts trying to censor speech I get angry. Freedom of speech is one of our cherished rights. It’s idiots like you that give press and air time to idiots like this that keep them coming back.

Hell, Obama is a racist for defending the black professor and bad mouthing the white cop when he had no information about the case. Obama decided the white guy was wronging the Brother just because he was white and a cop. In fact, the Brother coped an attitude and then refused to cooperate when the cop was just following up an a reported break-in at house.

I bet you the car insurance industry does horrible in San Antonio

  5. TexasDuncan - Apr 26, 2010 at 4:07 PM

Brandon, you must be talking about the wrong guy. I know Mike personally and he isn’t racist and never did drugs. Grew up with Mike in Duncanville and went to college with him. He tweeted something stupid, but he is not a racist. I’m a hundred percent sure you never saw him smoking weed outside of a bar.

Nothing is better than reading the comments of “dirty Nazi-Republicans” and “dirty stinking Democrats”. I’ll bet the “dirty Mexicans” and “dirty Jews” are laughing at us now. Of course the “dirty Chinese” aren’t wasting the work day like us. …so back to work everyone.

@AZ Lady, that is really unfortunate about the Copper Queen Hospital, and your grandson’s birth. But your anger is misdirected. Mexicans (or human beings, as some call them) who are not afforded decent health care in their country are coming to America to get health care they do not intend to pay for, and it’s being given to them. You’re blaming them? These are problems that can be fixed, calling people names does nothing to address the issue.

Another good article, Craig (as usual)
Yes, it was a racist statement…those
who think otherwise, need to have their
    head’s examined

I also know Mike Bacsik personally. In fact, in the last 17 years he’s never been out of my sight one time. I know he never smoked weed or said racist things, because if he did I woulda seen it. He did a ton of steroids, and he lubed up his pitches with Vaseline, and he messed around on his wife with junior high girls (and boys), and he didn’t pay his fair share of the income tax. He also stole cable TV. But he DID NOT say bad things about the Hispanish peoples, swearsies.
This train is officially off the tracks…

I’m a caucasian girl who lives here in SA and this IS a totally racist comment. This city is FULL of beautiful, wonderful people of Mexican heritage. Mike can kiss my white @**

  13. David - Apr 26, 2010 at 6:40 PM

@jack what does the car insurance industry have to do with this discussion? Moron. It is a big deal, the guy who said it is an arrogant well off white man, who thinks he can say whatever he wants, and he also made homosexually charged comments about Stern. He must be crazy.

  14. RichardInDallas - Apr 26, 2010 at 6:53 PM

@David – NOBODY knows crazy better than you! I’d say I’ve missed you and it’s good to see your fine work again, but that would be a lie, and I don’t lie…

Ruby’s is the best damn rib joint in the USA and the food is cooked and served by mexicans, blacks and white trash. But there is no Jews working there and that’s anti-Semitism .So don’t be pointing the finger at .. unless it’s in the mirror. SuckerMC.Rasheed Wallace called Stern a racist because Stern makes $20 million a year and Sheed “only ” makes $ 17 million. I hope the Spurs win with Manu the Italian Hispanic and beat the Fakers. So suck on that.

  16. John in Springfield - Apr 26, 2010 at 7:17 PM

How is it a racist statement? Yes, it’s insensitive and completely wrong to characterize any group this way, but racist it’s not. Mexican people are not a race unto themselves, “Mexican” refers to their nationality not to their race. Mexican people’s race would generally be classed as caucasion, so, again, this is a non issue.

  17. Zoyd - Apr 26, 2010 at 8:05 PM

OK, John, he’s not a racist. He’s a bigot. Does that make him a better human being?

  18. Richard - Apr 26, 2010 at 10:56 PM

We the Mexican-Americans in San Antoniodo care. The JERK does not need to on radio or tv.

  19. I Carlson - Apr 26, 2010 at 11:09 PM

    WTF!!!!
Blond jokes are just as insensitive as the comments made by this prick.
If it was directed at you, you’d be pretty pissed off.
Fans are just fans and possibly good people that we don’t even
know. All people deserve equal respect weather their blacks, hispanics, caucaseans or any other race. NO ONE DESERVES THIS KIND OF CRAP BECAUSE OF A GAME!!!
Truth does come out when alcohol is about.
Yes this in fact does make him what he truely is.
    RACIST!!!!!!!!!! RACIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!! RACIST!!!!!!!!!

  20. David - Apr 27, 2010 at 9:34 AM

    Mr. Bacsik,
    Not cool.

My insurance rates went down the two years I lived there, and up again when I moved back to the east coast.

  22. Bluesky - Apr 27, 2010 at 9:46 AM

Okay this is totally ridiculous. Clearly Bacsik’s comment was racist. Come on, let’s be truthful here. Think about it. Had he made that extact same comment about African American’s that guy would have been fired on the spot. No matter what ethnic group he would have been referring to, that comment was down right racist. I appreciate Craig taking the time to write this article and it definately wasn’t a waist of time. Thank you Craig.

  23. Sweet Clean Mexican - Apr 27, 2010 at 11:39 AM

It was racist, I’m a sweet clean Hispanic and I’m pissed that I wasn’t included in being congradulated a victory. Same for my dirty white white, very insensitive by bascik!
Btw, if the majority of SA is Latino and said Latinos don’t normally shower at night, then he was technically speaking correct. It’s not what you say it’s how you say it.

More national press for the little Ticket, KTCK AM 1310, KTDK FM 104.1 and KTBK AM 1700 – also on HD at 99.5-2

  25. karma - Apr 27, 2010 at 3:31 PM

Are you really serious Chris? If you’re going to break this down and argue semantics and define each word seperately, then you’re failing to see the big picture because you just don’t want to.
Open up your mind. Racist discrimination does not relate to only the 4 races in the world. If you want to get technical about it, i suggest you do some reading on the subject matter. There are quite a few definitions of the word racist and it is a complex and very researched social ill. Racial discrimination can be based not only on race, but also skin color (especially within subgroups), ethnicity, nationality, cultural background, & religion.
“dirty Mexican” is a common racial slur amongst the Mexican & Mexican American community, for anyone to break it down word for word…dirty, mexican – you’re ignoring the point. Ignorance is bliss for some people, i guess.
Furthermore…this is one tweet, but how many degrading comments has he made about people before finally getting caught? There is a research study regarding drunk driving…drunk drivers will admit to having driven drunk hundreds of times before getting caught. I’m sure that even if he didn’t tweet it or say it aloud…Bacsik, like all other humans, is a creature of habit. He has probably habitually said/thought such types of things many times over. He just now got caught.
I would say, he is racist and if he wants to hide behind the fact that he was drunk…that is no better! Just makes him a drunken racist.
