After ugly rehab start, Chris Young to undergo 'further testing'

May 4, 2010, 2:44 PM EDT

What happens when you’re supposed to be tuning up for a return to the majors with a rehab start at Double-A and instead you cough up five runs without making it out of the first inning? Well, in the case of Chris Young and his injured shoulder the Padres have ordered “further testing.”
“I think we’re going to have him undergo some tests in another couple of days,” manager Bud Black said. “He’s a little sore from his outing, and we’ll reevaluate the shoulder probably with another MRI in three or four days.”
Young has been out since throwing six shutout innings in the second game of the season and had hoped to be off the disabled list by now, but obviously he’s not close to returning. San Diego’s rotation has been just fine without him, ranking third in the league with a 3.03 ERA in large part thanks to fill-in Wade LeBlanc going 2-0 with a 0.52 ERA in three starts.

If LeBlanc keeps pitching well it will be interesting to see what happens when Young is healthy. The Padres are out of options with Gallagher but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him released. Unless they want LeBlanc to get regular work as a starter in which case I guess they could send him back to AAA until Latos hits his innings limit.
