I grew up as a kid in the 50′s and just fell in love with this magnificent pitcher. He had it all. How about 35 straight complete games, won 28 games one season, 6 straight seasons winning 20 or more games, pitching a 17 inning 300 pitch game, starting 3 games in the last 5 games of the 1950 season when the Quakers won the NL pennant. Never a mean word from his mouth, started 5 all star games. This is stuff of hall of famers. Ops, he is in the HOF. The Philadelphia A’s Bobby Shantz and the Philadelphia Phillies Robin Roberts were the starting pitchers on a rainy all star game (called after 5 innings)at Connie Mack Stadium in the early 50′s. I was there. My late beloved mother took me to the game. I have his autographed baseball, hat and his wonderful book. The Whiz Kids, they are almost all gone now. I know, I know, I shouldn’t say this, but he was a Saint.
