Mets announcer Hernandez naps on the job

May 9, 2010, 4:25 PM EST

The Mets are 17-13 this season and are right on the heels of the Phillies in the NL East standings, but they’ve played six extra-innings games already, including a 20-inning tilt in mid-April with the Cardinals. That kind of schedule can drain players, are it can also drain broadcasters. Check out Mets analyst Keith Hernandez from the WPIX telecast of Saturday’s extra-innings victory over the Giants…

I was disappointed to find this to be the only article tagged with “unfortunate naps.”

  2. SouthofHeaven - May 9, 2010 at 5:24 PM

Damnit, you beat me to it.

That’s nothing! The Dodgers announcers, other than Vin Scully of course, nap on the job all the time, even while they’re talking.

  5. Curious George - May 9, 2010 at 9:19 PM

I find myself succumbing to sleep in the 1st inning when watching the Mets.

This is a disgrace, he deserves to be fired though I know the Mets will never do that to their 80s golden boy. This, the woman in the dugout comment from ’06, a few weeks ago the team came back from a commercial and he’s talking to Gary Cohen about a 23-year old woman that he thought was hot and he stared at her for 3 minutes. I know he won’t get the axe due to his status in Mets lore, but not even Mets fans can argue that sort of shit this is tolerable.

Keith is a great. He is funny, insightful and honest. The whole SNY team is one of the best.

  8. Tim - May 10, 2010 at 12:00 PM

Relax, he’s one of the more tolerable announcers out there. He’s funny, and I appreciate the fact that at least he doesn’t hide who he is. He was sleeping during the commercial break, honestly that’s pretty funny.

I bet if Joe Morgan/Tim McCarver did it you’d be singing a different tune my friend.

  10. Nick - May 10, 2010 at 2:00 PM

Morgan or McCarver napping during a broadcast would be preferable to the drivel we get when they’re awake.

  11. NeverSeenThemWinOne - May 10, 2010 at 2:17 PM

Intolerable?! This is what makes the broadcast fantastic – the desperate attempts by Ron Darling and Gary Cohen to make sure Keith keeps up with his insightful and interesting commentary while steering him away from the realm of the deeply offensive and profane! It’s like putting a toddler in a playpen and telling him to stick to the building blocks while avoiding the action figures.
Furthermore, one quote that makes Keith SO worth it – they’re speaking in reference to Oliver Perez:
Gary: “97 pitches with one out in the fourth. You know how hard that is to do?”
Keith: “You know how hard that is to watch?

Seriously? He’s the most interesting, honest, surprising and fun announcer in the sport. Who would you rather listen to? John Sterling? It was a 20 inning game, for crying out loud. Get a life.

  13. Nom nom - May 10, 2010 at 4:11 PM

Anyone remember when he called Kaz Matsui ‘the only chink in the armor’ of the Mets’ 2005 lineup?

  14. Lionheart! - May 10, 2010 at 8:24 PM

20 inning game? This was yesterday’s 9 inning game. Next time know what you’re talking about before you open your big mouth.

OMG GOOD ONE YOU SHOWED HIM
