Keeping both Damon and Matsui would have been a big mistake. They could only afford a roster spot for one of them. With veterans at C, SS and 3b Cashman could not afford to keep two veteran defensively suspect DH types. Since Damon was considered the better of the two defensively he clearly seemed to be the Yankee preference. The problem with that was his idiotic contract expectations. Matsui wasn’t about to sit around waiting for Damon’s situation to determine his fate so he jumped on the first good offer. Damon’s ” don’t bother if it’s not three years at 13 mil per stance” wasn’t ever going to fly, which is why he settled with Detroit for about the same contract the Yankees offered. Signing Nick Johnson as the DH is a separate issue and now looks to clearly be a bust. But, Matsui moved quick and Damon was unreasonable. Those are the primary reasons neither are here this year.

Posada broke his foot as a result of a foul ball hitting, .. which has nothing to do with age.
“… muscle pulls, tweaks, and even broken bones don’t heal as fast the older one gets.”
the “tweaks and pulls” are Swisher and Granderson, both of whom are in their 20s.
If you saw the Posada interview last night when asked about the three to four week time frame he stated; “…I don’t care what they say I’ll be back in two weeks.” Considering what I’ve seen of Posada over the years I go with his estmiate.

It’s not the same BP. Hughes had to go into the rotation even if he was the last guy left. Aceves, imho, hasn’t been the same since he was overworked. Coke is in Detroit, and Bruney is in Washington. Coke and Bruney weren’t major losses, but Hughes and Aceves were 15-2 out of the BP last year. They’ll get better, since I can’t see Mo & Joba slumping like this, but the BP is not likely to be as good as last year.

Time to re-think Brian Cashman. Letting Pettite go, and bringing in the very unYankee Big Unit, cost the Yankees a few critical world series victories in the past. How could he conceive breaking up the Core Four?
Letting BOTH Matsui and Damon go for the likes of Granderson, Wynn and Miranda and Nick Johnson. Hideki and Johnny were integral to the Yank’s win last year.
Then theres that Austin kid. What a loss, what a mistake
Oh yeah. Jorge. Without Posada the Yanks chances are in doubt. Alas.

It seems Nick Johnson has rubbed off on the rest of the team . It’s a long season and the wounded hopefully will have time to heal . They need to stay as close to the Rays as they can until they get healthy.

It is sad to hear that Posada’s foot is broken. However, at this point in his great career he is not as good as Cervelli behind the plate. Too many passed balls with Posada. When you watch a game on TV you see more of the catcher than any other player and Cervelli just looks more compentent back there.

Time for Jorge to realize his catching days are over and become the DH. The Yankees should should release Nick Johnson and find an outfielder that can hit and play the field. Thanks to Boris’s greed Johnny Damon is no longer a Yankee. Maybe Atlanta would want to part with Melky.

Hate seeing a class guy get hurt. He may be back in a month, but that doesn’t mean his foot will be fully healed–he’s going to feel it crowching behind the plate, jumping up to try to throw out runners, and even trying to leg out singles. It could affect his play all year. It’s really a shame.

I agree 100%. Cervelli is a better defensive catcher, and for yet one more year, the OPS for the pitching staff is worse with Posada than with the alternatives. Posada is a much better hitter than Johnson, and Cervelli is a better catcher than Posada.
As a RS fan, I’d much rather have Johnson DH and Posada catch than have Posada DH and Cervelli catch. I’m not sure why it’s even up for discussion.

I think Cervelli might be a capable back-up but, after last nights game against Tampa, I wonder about his arm. The Rays ran freely against Cervelli and he was helpless to do anything about it.

Even after he is “healed”, they could still use a runner for him after they can expand the roster.
Last nite there was no back-up outfielder, they have 13 pitchers (and could not get anybody out it seemed), they need Golson back up, depending on how bad Thames sprain is. And even if it is ok, he is a defensive liability late in the game.
They are hurting.
Posada will go down in Yankee history along side names like Yogi and Munson and other greats.

The Yankees are an old ball club ( in baseball age). Injuries like Posada’s are going to happen more than not with this team as opposed to say a team like Oakland. Already half the team is out with some kind of injury and we are not even in June yet. I hope they can hold on but muscle pulls, tweaks, and even broken bones don’t heal as fast the older one gets. They have a great team, but; time waits for no one.

I will miss Jorge Posada, one of my favorite Yankee but, I am so impressed with Francisco Cervelli. One hell of a tough out and so far a great clutch hitter. He is very solid behind the plate and knows how to call a game and has an above average arm.

I have to agree with the above post. Even as a Red Sox fan, I’m very impressed with what Cervelli has done so far. Not only does he bring a talented bat to the Yankee line-up, he is also calling games fairly well. Yanks will miss Posada, but not that much.

No rationale person wants to see a dependable veteran catcher like Jorge Posada go down with an injury for about a month of the season. Having said that, Cervelli will be a revelation during his tenure as the man behind the plate. His ability to do all the little things to win ballgames will finally get the attention he deserves.
