Quote of the Day: on Jeff Francoeur's approach at the plate

May 19, 2010, 11:00 AM EDT

“He doesn’t really have, like, an approach. He just goes up there
hacking.”

Braves starter Kris Medlen describing Jeff Francoeur’s hitting philosophy.  Which worked last night, it should be noted, as Francoeur took Medlen yard.  But it’s also the reason why it usually doesn’t work and why Francoeur is so frustrating a player to watch.

i just always figured he had the teddy roosevelt approach to hitting…swing hard and carry a big stick

    Dear Kris,
Then don’t give him anything to hit.
    Sincerely,
    Charles

Just because he’s right doesn’t mean it’s not sour grapes.

Francouer’s approach at the plate is equal to a blind squirrel finding a nut every now and then. A few seasons ago during a Matt Diaz at-bat he took a pitch that was easily a foot over his head, and you could clearly hear Francouer yelling from the dugout “good eye Matty!”

Jerry Manuel had Francoeur batting 8th yesterday until Barajas was scratched from the lineup. Manuel said he likes the idea of Francoeur hitting 8th because you don’t need an approach and can just go up swinging when you hit 8th. Left unsaid was that the 8th hitter sucks.
