La Russa, Pujols involved in yelling match

May 23, 2010, 8:48 AM EST

la russa and pujols.jpgThe Cardinals have scored fewer runs this season than the Diamondbacks, Brewers, Reds, Red Sox, Marlins, Angels, Rockies, Tigers and Mets, among others, and the frustration is really starting to build in St. Louis.  According to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, it may have reached a tipping point Friday, when superstar slugger Albert Pujols and future Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa shared a heated exchange in the Cardinals’ dugout.

La Russa called for outfielder Ryan Ludwick to steal second base with two outs in the eighth inning and Pujols at the plate.  Ludwick, of course, was gunned down, and Pujols was left standing at the dish.

Albert flipped his bat and helmet in disgust, then knocked over two trays of gum in the home dugout.  La Russa yelled “that’s enough,” and after a few moments added “I (expletive) know how to manage.”

Both La Russa and Pujols played it off as a non-issue when asked to describe the incident Saturday and it sure sounds like a heat of battle moment.  But few would argue that the Cardinals are struggling, or at least under-performing in a weak National League Central division.  In fact, the Reds are currently in first place by a half-game.

Just to lighten it up some. LaRussa is so popular in STL, when the cop gave him a field sobriety test, 3 drivers pulled over and bunted.

Knocked over two trays of gum… rage? Did he bitch slap anyone, too?

Ludwick — a.k.a. Mattress Delivery Guy — is 0 for 3 in SB attempts this year. In his 9 year MLB career, he’s stolen 16 and got caught stealing 15 times! Let’s face it: LaRussa had a brain fart and Albert called him out on it.

I am sick of the crybaby chicanos playing this game. We need more American black players in MLB!!

I FEEL THAT THIS HAPPENS TO ALL TEAMS ON OCCASION AND THE PRESS MAKES TOO MUCH OUT OF IT—-WINNING IS ABOUT TEAM CONCEPTS AND THE ABILITY TO FORGIVE AND FORGET.

“Roids”? Pujols? He did not suddenly start hitting 70 HRs per season yesterday (ie – see Sosa, Griffey, Bonds and McGwire) and then stop immediately after the Roid issue caused some effect. Pujols has “only” been one of the premier, consistently, hiiters since he first set foot on the MLB fields. Wake up and smell reality.

The Braves now have their own version of a steroid clone. Baseball continues to turn their head because the game needs the long ball on ESPN highlights to sell tickets. Pitching, defense and team play I guess is boring to many so the ballparks continue to get smaller so juiced up hitters can hit it far and deep. LaRussa and Billy Martin would have been a lot of fun after a game but a designated driver would have been a must.

  9. Brian - May 24, 2010 at 11:54 AM

Griffey was not a juicer! Ever!

  10. Fred V - May 24, 2010 at 12:41 PM

Spring training… Pujols would not sign a baseball before a game BECAUSE “LaRussa has already signed that one!”

  11. beagamer - May 24, 2010 at 1:46 PM

What’s that have to do with anything in this article. Did you make your little league team?

  12. jared - May 24, 2010 at 3:23 PM

TLR always baffles me. I think he may have had a few the inning before.

  13. Tony - May 24, 2010 at 3:56 PM

Pujols needs to be set down and told he can not show up his team. We all know he is a juicer, but that does not give him authority to act like the ASS we know he is. He and LaRussa both need to be shown the door.

McGwire!!! Not Mcguire! And oh yes, he is a jerk and a cheat!

  15. Justin - May 25, 2010 at 1:58 PM

Fact? Produce proof…oh wait, let me guess, you lost it. Or you just do not have any.

  16. Justin - May 25, 2010 at 2:07 PM

Griffey? Are you kidding me? Seriously? You really just put his name in with roid users? Wow…you must be an idiot who knows nothing about baseball.

  17. Tony - May 25, 2010 at 6:40 PM

    your a fuckin idiot

  18. joeyd - May 25, 2010 at 8:08 PM

Looks as if there are a lot of Reds and Cubs fans commenting on this article. Bullshit people with bullshit comments and opinions.
Pujols is not now nor never has been on steroids. You idiots who claim so need to present your proof or shut the f— up!!
Tony did the right thing by running Luddy. Had he made it, Pujols could have gotten an RBI with a single. That is all he has hit for a month. Personally, I think he is hurt. He may need to go ahead and get that Tommy John surgery.
I wish some of you would chose something other than your rearends to come up with your comments.

  20. James - May 28, 2010 at 5:45 PM

Do you have any prove to that statement? Nope.

  21. Lou - Jun 11, 2010 at 9:11 AM

    Does Larussa manage or OVERMANAGE??
