Quote of the Day: Lance Berkman gets honest

May 26, 2010, 2:15 PM EDT

“We’re just not very good.”

Lance Berkman, saying something about the 2010 Houston Astros that you rarely hear players say about their teams before, like, late August in any given year.  It’s almost always “things just aren’t working right now” or “we’ve had terrible luck” or something like that.  The fact that he’s being so honest about things right now, while refreshing on some level, is kind of shocking.

You know why they’re not good? Too much negativism from players like Berkman…

Such candor cannot go unpunished. The question is which is the greater punishment–trading him, or making him stay?

Sorry, but any negativism from Berkman is the least of their problems. The *team* has an OPS of .596. That’s more than 70 points lower than the Pirates who are next-worst at .670. Only Berkman and a pitcher have an OPS+ > 100 (league average) and they are barely over 100. This could be a historically bad offense. Berkman’s comment was quite the understatement.

I live in Baltimore and as bad as the Orioles have been, I expect the O’s will easily finish with more wins than the Astros, especially if they trade Oswalt, who along with Lindstrom, is by far among their best performers this season.
