Randy Wells is knocked the heck out of the box

May 28, 2010, 4:42 PM EDT

Randy Wells.jpgThe Cubs are playing the Cardinals this afternoon. Randy Wells got the start. It went like this:

  • Single to Felipe Lopez;
  • Double for Ryan Ludwick;
  • RBI single for Albert Pujols;
  • Single for Matt Holliday;
  • RBI single for Colby Rasmus;
  • RBI double for Yadier Molina;

5-0 lead for the Cardinals before an out was ever recorded, and Wells is out of the game.  Assuming Carlos Zambrano’s digestive system can be restored to order, you have to figure that it will be Wells’ turn he takes when he returns to the rotation.

    It was a bad start and his ERA/WHIP are now 4.79/1.37, but he has a 4-1 K/BB ratio and a solid HR/9 and ground ball rate. His first pitch strike % is exceptional and he is getting a very impressive 11% swinging strike rate. I think it would be a mistake to send him down after this performance. He has nothing to learn in AAA and his 2010 peripherals are better than his 2009 peripherals.

    That would be really unfair if true. He had a 3.99 ERA and 1.26 WHIP heading into the game. In his last 3 starts: 23 IP, 2.74 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, 3/17 BB/SO. Actually, the entire Cubs rotation is doing pretty well, so whoever loses their rotation spot to Big Fat Z is getting a raw deal.

    When I got to the game today, my first thought–honestly–was, “Man, I sure would enjoy watching a boringly comfortable win today. Maybe they can knock Wells out in the first.” But I wasn’t even dreaming about them knocking him out before he recorded an out.
    Today aside, I’ve gotta agree with the folks above: Wells deserves to keep his spot a while longer if at all possible. He was so good last year, and his peripherals suggest he is far from having lost it.

    I would be pissed if Wells lost his starting gig

    Ridiculous if Wells loses his spot for 12 bad minutes. Lou and Cubs brass couldn’t possible be that dumb. Gorzy has to go – and this is a no brainer when Silva levels off. Major correction is coming there.
