The Giants suddenly like Buster Posey

May 28, 2010, 5:42 PM EST

posey swining.JPGAfter a solid month of saying that Buster Posey wasn’t ready to play in the majors and that AAA stats mean nothing, the Giants seem to be changing their tune on their top prospect:

Sabean personally scouted the Triple-A club last week, he said top
prospect Buster Posey has really improved and the decision to promote
him is day-to-day at this point.
Sabean said there is a realistic chance, with Edgar Renteria and Mark
DeRosa out for the time being, that Posey could be recalled to play
first base and Aubrey Huff could move to left field.

It’s been easy to beat up Sabean over his seeming reluctance to give Posey a chance, but based on this sudden change of heart, one can’t help but think that Sabean was simply far more committed to pretending that Posey’s situation isn’t being dictated by service time than most other GMs are.

Sabean just wants to show case him for McPhail to set up the Wiggington-Posey swap where Posey comes to Ballmer to take up the miles of slack left by Garret Atkins.

I’m hoping the comment above (#1) was made in jest.

Doesn’t Posey already have ~33 days of service time?? If the Giants are worrying about super-2 they have another month to wait. If they’re worried about a 7 th yearthey should be fine now…

I’ve been listening to Sabean’s song and dance for at least a month now, and he’s denied from day one that not calling Posey up was money motivated. I believe the expression I’m looking for that applies is, don’t piss on my head and tell me it’s raining. It’ll never happen, but it’s only obvious they haven’t called him up because they’re saving money, and for Sabean to say otherwise insults our collective intelligence.

What I think the Giants do is to trade Molina to the Rangers for Catcher Max Ramirez and maybe a prospect and then let Posey and Whiteside catch and sign Burrell for the league Min and let him play Left… that would gives up a new looking line up,
    1st-huff
    2nd-freddy sanchez
    3rd-panda
    ss- uriba
    c- posey
    lf-burrrell

you sir are on crack cocaine. there is no way that the Rangers would give up a young promising offensive-minded C like Ramirez for a veteran like Molina, not to mention adding in another prospect.

You must be on that magic bus with Timmy and Zito. The Giants lineup is a JOKE. This does not scare anyone! Just old used up players with a couple of below average hitters. What a JOKE.

There have been a ton of sarcastic comments and columns written about Sabean’s handling of Posey and two things stand out:
    1. Despite the league-wide focus on defense, all you read are comments about how Posey would help the Giants offense. No one ever mentioned how young players learning a position at the major league level can negatively impact his offensive performance, or the fact that catchers overall will generally take the longest to develop their offense because of the defensive demands on the position.
    2. Fans seem to feel betrayed, that Sabean has been lying to them. If anything, he’s been lying to the league. If Sabean said “we’re keeping Posey in AAA until May 29th in order to guarantee financial control in his services for as long as possible” the Player’s Union would most likely file a grievance.
