Lost in the Joycean drama: Austin Jackson made an incredible catch

Jun 2, 2010, 11:49 PM EDT

If it weren’t for the bad call by Jim Joyce we’d definitely be talking about this more: Austin Jackson made an absolutely incredible catch for the first out in the ninth inning of Armando Galarraga’s non-perfecto.

Check out the video here.  Mark Grudzielanek smacked it to the deepest part of Comerica Park — left-center — Jackson ranged after it forever and made an over-the-shoulder catch that was seven shades of spectacular.  Though not quite as spectacular as the catch DeWayne Wise made in Mark Buehrle’s perfect game last year — which was a good eight or nine shades of awesome — it belongs in the same conversation.

Here’s hoping that Jackson fares better than Wise in the long run, however.  He got stuck in AAA with the Phillies this year and got so fed up that he exercised an out-clause in his contract today and is now a minor league free agent.

But it was an amazing catch from Jackson, that’s for sure.

Absolutely amazing. 20 sprinting strides to track down that hard hit ball. Ironically, it reminds me of another CF..Ken Griffey Jr.

And the Twins just lost a game on a bad call with two outs in the 9th inning that, had the correct call been made, would have extended the game into the 11th. Pretty much the worst possible night for umpires all around. Giving up a perfect game on an erroneous call and then costing a team a game on a bad call as well. Instant replay what?

WHEN not IF, this leads to replays in calls like such in crucial moments… as a sign of appreciation to Gallaraga, for having something so special being taken away from him… something that he has clearly earned… we should all call the replay “the Gallaraga replay.” I just hope I get credit for the idea WHEN this happens. LOL. Just to make things clear… I am a Yankees fan… not a Tigers fan :)

I think you need a “literary puns” tag. Or even just a “puns” tag.

The catch was spectacular! Standing at the CF rail next to the ivy, I can honestly say that my sons and I (along with a couple next to us) were the closest to Jackson when he made that catch…about 25 ft away, almost straight up!

If you look at where he was when the ball is hit and where he ends up it is absolutely amazing how much ground he covered.
