Attention Dumb Tigers fans: leave Jim Joyce alone

Jun 4, 2010, 1:15 PM EDT

I’m not saying all Tigers fans upset with the call in the other night’s game are dumb. Just the ones who are CALLING THE WRONG JIM JOYCE:

“I was watching it in our family room,” said a
different Jim Joyce from Toledo. “We’re Tigers fans, so we were
disappointed as well.”

But Joyce’s disappointment quickly turned to
frustration, then fear. Fans upset with the umpire Joyce’s call heard
announcers say the umpire was from Toledo and started calling the other
Jim Joyce who’s listed in the Toledo phone book.

“I would guess 40 would be conservative,”
Joyce said. “They were coming in…four or five at a time it seemed
like, with call waiting and everything.”

Somebody even posted his name, address and
phone number on Facebook. Thursday morning the misidentified Jim Joyce
had to cancel his home phone service.

“Everybody was pretty irate quite honestly,”
Joyce said, describing the calls. “A lot of them are vulgar things. Some
of them were funny about me needing new glasses but then they’d follow
it up with vulgarity as well.”

I love baseball more than just about anyone I know, but I can’t imagine what would cause me to seek out the phone number of an umpire so that I can call him at home to berate him (though if I did, I imagine I’d do my best to make sure it was the right guy).

Certain segments of society suffer from a perspective deficit disorder.

“Do you have Prince Albert in a can?” Such puerile tactics are not to be unexpected.

As a long time Tiger’s fan I couldn’t be more proud of the reception the fans showed to Jim Joyce yesterday when he walked onto the field. They could have turned on him very easily and booed him out of the park but they didn’t. The Tiger organization and the Tiger’s fans are a class act and it showed in how they responded to Mr. Joyce.

Isn’t “Perspective Deficiency Disorder” what we used to call “knuckledragging asshole syndrome”?

Now this guy’s life is ruined like Steve Bartman’s, all because an umpire blew a call. Great.
And this poor guy, unlike Bartman DIDN’T DO ANYTHING.
Hopefully they can trace some of the calls and throw these idiots in jail. Or make them take a long drink out of the Gulf of Mexico to help with the oil spill.

He made a mistake. He realized it. He admitted it. He apologized for it. It’s DONE! Move on.

Kinda like Mark Wahlberg in Three Kings. Great scene, that.

Booner’s correct, the vast majority of Tigers fans (like the vast majority of all baseball fans) are fine people. Sadly, that doesn’t mean there aren’t “fans” who suffer “knuckledragging asshole syndrome.” They, too, are unfortunately everywhere. In addition to the above article, I also heard the umpire Jim Joyce mention in an interview that his wife and kids had been harrassed as well–and obviously they, too, had nothing to do with any blown calls.

Couldn’t these people figure out that it would be pretty difficult for the umpire Jim Joyce to answer his home phone in Ohio when he’s working the Tigers series in Detroit!?

Now you did it…applying logic to this situation. Oh, and possibly the fact that he has such a high-profile job in which he makes calls that affect games and potentially seasons, would probably cause him to keep his info OUT of a public phone book.

But, leosgr8 nailed it. It happened. He admitted his error. He apologized. IT WAS ACCEPTED!!! Time to move on and leave his family alone.
