I demur. Hanley has thirty home run power. Putting him atop the lineup is a colossal waste of RBI opportunities. Hanley hits for power and for a high average and he’s fast when he’s not lazy, which makes him the ideal number three guy in my book. Coghlan is the leadoff guy when he’s clicking and he is clicking now. Whatever’s bothering Hanley – and you’ll note his recent travails correspond nicely with his little blossoming of juvenile petulance a few weeks ago – will work itself out just as nicely further down the order a bit. Eventually Gabi Sanchez should mature into a pretty good number two batter, and he and Coghlan can set the table very nicely for Hanley and (ultimately) Stanton. Maybin is still a question mark, and down here Feesh fans, such as they are, are already calling in the talk shows suggesting he be packaged with someone and unloaded. But I suspect he will work out fine in the long run – the Feesh pulled their hair out over Derrick Lee for two and a half years before he clicked. Give Maybin some more time. His natural talents are prodigious and once he gets tracked, look out NL East pitchers.

This might be more of the normal lineup if Stanton is everything he projects to be. Sure, they’re going to “protect” him by hitting him 7th for awhile. Just like Atlanta protected Heyward. Where is that kid hitting now? By July Stanton will be hitting 3rd and getting lots of RBI opps with Hanley and Coghlan setting the table.
