Sorry, have to stick up for Costas, Kaat and Smoltz here. A great broadcasting team. Costas knows his stuff and always impresses with his baseball knowledge and certainly isnt afraid to share his opinion. I love the criticism of the pitch count, and personally find the discussion facinating.
In any event, I live in the market and had the choice of FSN Pittsburgh, MASN or MLB Network. It was an easy decision to choose Costas.

Well, you know, to each his own and all that. I just happen to find Costas’ penchant for stringing together endless amounts of overly wordy clauses irritating, and the grandiose way he has of stating the obvious grating. Also, tonight’s obsession with Walter Johnson comparisons got old reeeaal fast.

As to the pitch count thing – it’s fine if you agree with the point being made (I’m on the fence, personally), and either way it’s fine for someone to make the point, especially a Hall of Fame pitcher. But make your point, and move on. Those two would not shut up about it the whole damn game. Kaat in particular came off as a they-don’t-make-’em-like-they-used-to, boy-the-good-ol’-days-were-grand old coot with obvious disdain for the smart people who work very hard to gather information, educate themselves, and make informed decisions to protect multi-million-dollar investments and careers.

And how about Smoltz definitively stating that Kerry Wood’s injury troubles had nothing to do with his high pitch counts early in his career and were entirely due to his imperfect mechanics. Because Smoltz is totally a doctor, and a biomechanics expert, and has x-ray vision and thus has seen directly into Wood’s shoulder.

Anyway…Strasburg was pretty fucking filthy eh?

I think you’re completely wrong. I’ve really enjoyed the broadcast tonight and it’s refreshing to hear announcers that don’t seem to have a rooting interest either way criticize the ridiculous pitch count and innings limit philosophy. The other “jackass” is Jim Fucking Kaat for christsakes.

Bob Costas is just awful. And I don’t mean in general; in fact before he started doing games for MLB TV I had a pretty high opinion of him as far as sports broadcaster types go. But he is just terrible at calling baseball. And Smoltz and that other jackass will not stop bitching about pitch counts.

More baseball is always good, but fuck…watching games on MLB TV is fucking brutal.
