The story of Pete Rose's corked bat

Jun 8, 2010, 12:15 PM EDT

One of Pete Rose’s old lackeys — Tommy Gioiosa — told the world many years ago that Rose corked his bats.  Based on everything we knew about the guy at the time: that he was a risk-taker, a pathological competitor and a guy who viewed rules as something less than mild suggestions, it wasn’t hard to believe him.

But now there’s proof of it, in the form of one of Charlie Hustle’s bats from his 1985 chase of Ty Cobb, cork and all. It comes along with a story of the bat’s history over at Deadspin today that is some good readin’.

So: even if we get Rose un-banned, is everyone still comfortable with him making the Hall of Fame? Or does the old unlevel playing field argument apply only to steroids?

UPDATEHere’s a lot more on Pete Rose and the corked bat, including my response to your comments about how corked bats aren’t supposed to help anybody.

A game-used corked bat would add to the mountain of evidence that ballplayers only take the rulebook as a suggestion, especially when baseball’s supposedly sacrosanct records are at stake.

Interesting take. If players don’t consider the records that “hallowed”, why should we?

  2. Patrick - Jun 8, 2010 at 12:31 PM

His hit record is the one record that I seriously hope gets broken some time soon.

  3. Joe L - Jun 8, 2010 at 12:34 PM

Rose is a lying liar’s lying liar. The minute he guaranteed the bat would not be corked is the minute we all knew it absotively would be.

  4. BC - Jun 8, 2010 at 12:38 PM

Here’s hoping Jeter hangs around another 10 years and breaks the record.

  5. Doug - Jun 8, 2010 at 12:42 PM

Unfortunately, I think that hit record is pretty untouchable at this point.
You would have to average 210 hits for 20 seasons.

  6. tm - Jun 8, 2010 at 12:44 PM

Jeter’s the active leader with about 2,800, so that’s not happening anytime soon.

  7. Professor Dave - Jun 8, 2010 at 12:46 PM

Great story, if not so well written.

  8. Cru11 - Jun 8, 2010 at 1:14 PM

Ichiro culdve been a candidate…if he wouldnt have broke into the league at 27.

  9. Oldtimer - Jun 8, 2010 at 1:45 PM

Once, Barry, or Roger, or Alex gets elected to the HOF, it won’t make any difference. That’s when it will become a total joke anyway.
Baseball may continue, but what will the HOF really mean? Nothing.

  10. Jeff - Jun 8, 2010 at 1:53 PM

As a famous comedian once said…”most hall of famers have taken performance enhancing drugs. You can’t say that cocaine didn’t help those players see every stich on that ball when it was coming in. They could tell if it was a curve the second it left the pitchers hand.” Now as for Pete, he is a liar. No doubt. But his ability to hit, should be noted and awarded.

It is sad to say but it looks like all the “stars” from MLB are cheaters.
As a baseball fan it just saddens me to know that everyone one of them cheats, that’s the impression I’m getting that they ALL cheat now. Some I guess are better cheaters than others.

Mythbusters proved in an episode that a corked bat actually is less effective as an uncorked bat.

Welcome to the world of being a fan of professional cycling

Who say’s Cobb’s bat was not corked? As I understand he wasn’t the most scrupulios man arond in his day.

THE MOST ARROGANT PIECE OF S#@T I HAVE EVER MEET… I HAD THE UNLUCKY FORTUNE OF SITTING NEXT TO THE “HIT KING” ON A FLIGHT FROM VEGAS TO FT.LAUDERDALE .. AS ARROGANT AS SOUTH FLORIDA AIR IS HUMID!! ASKED HIM TO SIGN A AUTOGRAPH FOR MY SON AND HE TOLD ME HE GETS 100 TO SIGN THEM IN CEASERS PALACE OR SOME OTHER HOTEL THERE .. MY SON REALLY WANTED ONE I TOLD HIM ID PAY HIM HE TOLD ME TO GO TO VEGAS .. HA PLEASE I USE TO TAKE MY OLDEST SON TO YANKEES STADIUM IN FT.LAUDERDALE IN THE EARLY 90′S AND ,MANTLE,FORD,JACKSON,BERRA,RIZZUTO WERE ALL HAPPY TO SIGN AUTOGRAPHS TAKE PICTURES AND ATLEAST PRETEND THEY WERE NICE GUYS .. “CHARLIE PATHETIC”P.S. 20. BC - Jun 8, 2010 at 2:16 PM

Hey, I don’t care WHO breaks it. Jeter looks like the only one with a chance unless Ichiro plays until he’s 50. Maybe Pujols, he’s 30 and has about 1,800 but he’d have to still have to be at this psychotic pace until he’s like 40 or 41.

  21. GETREAL - Jun 8, 2010 at 2:16 PM

YEAH THATS A GOOD ONE EH… STUPID HOSER… HES GOOD BUT HE AINT THAT GOOD HOSER\

  22. markfd - Jun 8, 2010 at 2:19 PM

Lift his ban the day he dies, then let the veteran’s committee have the burden of putting him in or not!

  23. Carlo - Jun 8, 2010 at 2:20 PM

So, cycling is the only sport with cheaters? Pretty funny – ‘roids being used by American golfers, Pro Bowl trips for defensive starts bulked on PED’s, plus HGH from the Bay to the Mississippi arch to the Big Apple with corked swizzle stick. We can all be sure that football and baseball have cleaned up their act with their “don’t ask – don’t tell’ drug testing system and because Selig & Goodell say so. They wouldn’t lie now would they?

  24. Give Me a Break - Jun 8, 2010 at 2:22 PM

Pete Rose is the man, tired of all you haters. I’m also tired of the old fogies prying into everyone’s personal life to justify why their ball players were better than the ball players of generations after them. Who cares? Not me. It’s only baseball, get a grip.
BTW, Pete Rose is the man!!!

  25. welbus - Jun 8, 2010 at 2:22 PM

I believe the mythbusters dismissed the corked bath theory. The corked bat provides nothing more than a regular bat
