All-Star coaches named. Try to contain your excitement

Jun 10, 2010, 5:30 PM EDT

Joe Girardi and Charlie Manuel named their All-Star Game coaches this afternoon:  It’s Mike Scioscia and Bob Geren in the American League.  In the NL it’s Bud Black and Bruce Bochy.

The game is in Anaheim and all of the coaches are from California.  If the All-Star Game is like any company offsite I’ve ever been a part of, MLB is going to make Geren and Bochy carpool down and they won’t let Scioscia have a per diem allowance since he’s not leaving town.

I suspect that most managers wanted the time off. For example, Cito Gaston was asked and declined the invitation because he wanted to spend time with his family. For California based managers, the trip to and from Anaheim is less of a hastle.

No, Craig, technically you aren’t. But you’re a leader right? Leaders will want to be there.

An astute observation, especially since Bobby Cox has Hotlanta in first place in the NL East! Oh, yeah, maybe that’s why the manager of the Phillies didn’t chose him 😉 NO RESPECT is right.

Actually, Manuel asked Cox to coach, but Cox turned it down, presumably because he’d like the time off. That wasn’t reported in the linked story, but someone from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution tweeted it earlier today.
