Does Jerry Manuel deserve a contract extension?

Jun 15, 2010, 5:35 PM EDT

No, he doesn’t. And I apologize for a headline that would even suggest that I think he does. But that’s the question SNY’s Kevin Burkhardt poised on his Twitter account today:

Does Jerry Manuel deserve a contract extension?
Ill ask him on pre-game tonight.

Even better than poising the question rhetorically is asking Manuel himself.  I would probably pay $50 to hear Manuel say something like this:

Well, Kevin, I don’t. Our recent surge has far more to do with some key roster moves, the rotation really stepping things up and, let’s be honest, a weekend series against the Orioles didn’t hurt.  I’d say I’m a good fifth or sixth on the list of people who should get credit for us being in second place.  Really, a lot of managers could do it.”

Well, a boy can dream, can’t he?

Not really big on having him manage NOW. The best thing for the Metropolitans would be to have them take their respective horses and never cross the Shea-Ebbets Field-Bank of checks-bounced threshold again.

These are the sorts of things Met fans talk about, sadly. Apparently there’s a growing movement to sign Rod Barajas to a contract extension. The same Rod Barajas who has never before been a league average hitter, but is doing it now at 34. Smart organizations would offer him arbitration and hope for a comp pick. The Mets will probably sign him to a two year extension they’ll regret somewhere around month 3.

It’s ridiculous reactions like this that had me so conflicted about this season. Spending a whole summer watching bad baseball isn’t fun, but if a decent showing saves either Omar or Jerry from the chopping block is it really worth it?

I’m in the same position now with the Mets that I was in when Jim Fassel coached the Giants. I WANT THEM TO SUCK SO THEY CAN EVERYONE AND INSTALL COMPETENT PEOPLE TO RUN THE TEAM.
    Now where’s my %@!!#%$!!@ Maalox…?
