The Phillies "would love to get Cliff Lee back"

Jun 16, 2010, 3:38 PM EDT

File this Jack Curry tweet under Things No Phillies Fan Really Wants to Hear Right Now:

Spoke to baseball official who has regular contact
w/ Phils. He said they are itching to add a starter and would love to
get Cliff Lee back.

You can also file it under “Things That Would Never, Ever Happen in a Million Years.”  I mean, on what planet would Rubin Amaro — or any other GM — make a deal that screamed “I totally blew it last winter” like this one would?  How would this even work? As a do-over trade? Would Ramirez, Aumont and Gillies go back to Seattle?  Would Cliff Lee tell Amaro to eff-off the second he got off the plane in Philadelphia, or would he send him a telegram asking him to kindly eff-off prior to his arrival?

I think the Phillies would be more likely to make a trade for Terry Mulholland than they would for Cliff Lee at this point.

You could also file this under “something nobody could have POSSIBLY seen coming this off-season.” Oh, wait…

Ironically, Seattle, too, would probably be pleased to get a set of premier prospects (if Aumont and company still count) for Cliff Lee in a few weeks.

I would think that the Phillies would be more interested in winning another title than looking stupid. A third pennant in a row would sure quell any feelings of embarrassment.

Talk about a sore spot with Phillies fans…

Well, considering that the the prospect haul was lower the second time he was traded it doesn’t seem realistic that they’d get the same type of package for him.

And yet this sore spot festers and oozes. Yet the mariners may just want those guys back… Cliff Lee would surely rather go to the Mets just to rub it in Amaro’s face…. “Oh the humanity!!!!” rings a bell.

If the Phillies make the playoffs, I don’t see how this makes them look silly at all. I think it makes the mariners look foolish. Amaro would look pretty smart to have someone pay half of Lee’s salary, while the phillies picked up at least some level of prospect (three months of lee is worth less in trade than six months of lee) for letting the mariners own him for a few months.
If the Phillies don’t make the playoffs, then the whole Lee situation is a failure. Especially if the Phillies lose by a game or two to the team that trades for Lee…that would be the thing that no phillies fan wants to hear.
Getting Lee back for less that what we got for him would make this Phillie fan absolutely giddy.
