The Cubs are trying to peddle Fukudome to the Red Sox

Jun 18, 2010, 10:28 AM EST

Missed this when it came around, but Sean McAdam reported late Wednesday night that the Cubs recently approached the Red Sox to “gauge their interest” in Kosuke Fukudome.  The Red Sox have some holes in the outfield and Fukudome is versatile, but they passed all the same.

Which makes sense given that Fukudome is owed a boatload of money this year and next and can’t really, you know, play baseball all that well.  Indeed, I’m trying to figure out how that conversation even goes:

“Hey Theo! Jim Hendry here! Look, I don’t have a ton of time to talk, but I have a proposition for you: I’m looking to trade my overpriced, underperforming Japanese player who irritates my fan base. You interested? What? What do you mean you already have one . . .”

Why would the Sox want this guy over Darnell McDonald or Daniel Nava, or at all? It reminds me of the Frenchy rumors last season. I guess some people really think Theo Epstein is an idiot. It’s all Wily Mo Pena’s fault…
