Great Moments in Fandom: Mark Teixeira once tried to change his name to "Kurt"

Jun 22, 2010, 5:25 PM EDT

Odd story over at Walkoff Walk today: when Mark Teixeira was a kid he was a huge Nirvana fan. So big that, when Kurt Cobain offed himself, Teixeira took to calling himself “Kurt.”  Turned in schoolwork and filled out forms with his name as “Kurt Teixeira” and everything.

Rob at Walkoff Walk calls it “an unhealthy obsession,” but I think every kid goes through some phase of intense fandom like that at some point.

If you don’t believe me, just do a Google Search for “Kip Winger Calcaterra.”  But understand, I was young and impressionable . . .

Yeah, I use to go as Yankeesfan Big Bopper Len too, but styles change.

Do you get paid by the hit? Because I think you wrote this – “If you don’t believe me, just do a Google Search for “Kip Winger Calcaterra.” But understand, I was young and impressionable . . .” – in an attempt to get extra hits on this entry, since the only thing that comes up referring to “Kip Winger Calcaterra” is this blog entry.
    You are a sneaky fellow.

I wanted to change my name to Yngwie but somehow it just didn’t feel right. It’d be worth a hell of a lot in Scrabble though.
PS. Kip Winger is Jesus. (Of course we all know Clapton is God).
