Nothing about the save statistic establishes value. He can show he’s an effective pitcher again just as easily by pitching the 6th inning of a blowout.

BC hit it on the head.
Hoffmann has made it clear that he’s at the end of his rope. They’re (Brewers) trying to get him to the 600 mark and that’ll be the end of it. If he wasn’t so close, they would’ve cut ties already.

Maybe, just maybe, Doug Melvin is making this call and attempting to establish Trevor as a closer again to prove his worth and trade him before the deadline. Macha has done dumber things, but this may be an instance where he is crazy like a fox.

Then again, if the Brewers are basically conducting their own personal suck tournament this year, why the heck not get Hoffman his 600th? Let him get the number and then retire. If the Brewers finish 25 games out instead of 20, does it really matter?
