The Mets may get Cliff Lee, but they won't deal Angel Pagan to do it

Jun 25, 2010, 10:32 AM EDT

My gut tells me that the Mets are the most likely team to trade for Cliff Lee. They’re seemingly willing to part with Jenrry Mejia, who would be a good pickup for the M’s. They said yesterday that they wouldn’t demand an opportunity to negotiate with Lee on an extension before making a deal, which certainly makes life easier as well.  They’re in a tight damn playoff race.  Getting him would probably aggravate Phillies fans to no end. There’s just a ton going for a Lee-to-the-Mets deal.

What’s not going for it, however, is Angel Pagan. The Mets don’t want to part with him:

Several senior Mets officials said that because of the uncertainty
surrounding Carlos Beltran’s
health, the team does not have the luxury of trading Pagan, who has
greatly enhanced his value with a strong season subbing for Beltran in
center field.

Makes sense to me. You deal Pagan and you’ve merely created another hole while filling the rotation slot. You find a way to keep his bat in the lineup while adding Beltran soon and then snagging someone like Lee and you’ve transformed a frisky-but-flawed team into a serious contender.

Pagan is that rare ball player that took the criticism of his game as something constructive and made the changes needed to become a fine professional. If Beltran is not 100% when he comes back, Pagan will be very needed. Also, the rest of the bats in the line up are streaky, and dependable guys are at a premium. If Pagan is to be traded because his value is high, better to do so for a player not requiring a huge extension, or who is “rented”.

The Mets and their fans are playing the usual game–“Let’s get the biggest fish out there but not have to use anything good as bait.” I guess their Yankee fan big brothers have taught them something.

If Lee goes to the Mutts, i’ll cry. Like a big baby.

i think the yankees should go after lee – and trade chamberlain and burnett to do so.

I think Pagan is a decent player, but it he really not just a replaceable guy? Is he really something that would stop you from making a deal for Cliff Lee?
Okay, I just looked. He’s only 25. Maybe I’m underestimating him because I thought he was a lot older.
