Yeah, only casual fans want the calls to be correct so the most important aspect determining the outcome of the games is the players not the umpires.

The lovefest for instant replay has to goo. I doubt youre a serious baseball fan if you want to use instant replay on a call like that.

Exactly, he said she said thing, also known as hearsay, author is using someone with a personal stake in the story and not a neutral source. I believe mr leyland, however the umpire didnt contact media about this issue as far as i know. Again the author is hanging himself out in the open with this title, more properly titled he could cover himslef a bit with something like “Leyland says umpire admits mistake.” This is just my opinion but i did find the title to be misleading after reading the story. Mlb has taken a dim view of managers calling umpires out in the media in the past. Again it was a bad call, i have no reason not to believe he said he missed the call,but no where in the article, other than leyland saying he said he blew the call, is anything said by the umpire himself on the subject. The ump can deny this and it leaves Leyland hung out to dry. Baseball tonight had a great piece on it showing the viewer what could be seen from the umpire’s view, i found it very educational, and i view the close calls differently now knowing how hard it is for them to see from the slot .

Really, he blew multiple calls because the bases would’ve never been loaded had he not called every outside-corner pitch a ball. Saito and O’Flaherty were both squeezed a good bit. If he made a few calls correct before Damon is even on deck, then the Damon call would be a non-issue.

Title on this story is a bit misleading. While it was a horrible call i dont see umpire admitting he blew the call, i do see leyland saying ump missed it, and i believe that may get him a fine.

This umpire, ref, official, whatever you want to call it, joke is getting out of hand. Is it just me or does it seem like it is worse now than anytime before. I know replay has a lot to do with it, but how long have we had replay? Baseball umps are a joke, soccer refs are a joke with that whole World Cup fiasco. Something needs to be done. I am tired of seeing games decided by crappy officiating. Is there something the fans can do?

Do you really ever think there will be instant replay for strike three? I’m a big proponent of technology-assisted officiating, but that’s just stupid.
If anything, we need to let the umpires have real-time access to the pitch tracking data to assist their calls.

I like the trend of umpires admitting mistakes. Hopefully this is something that came down from MLB. FIFA could take note.
