Count the Phillies in on Dan Haren too

Jul 1, 2010, 12:12 PM EDT

You can add the Phillies to the list of suitors interested in Dan Haren, joining the Nationals and the Cardinals. Indeed, Jerry Crasnick tweets
that the Diamondbacks are scouting Phillies’ prospects to see what they might get in return.

Haren doesn’t appear to be having his best year ever — he’s 7-6 with a 4.56 ERA — but his strikeout and walk rates are pretty much the same as they ever are and not having a good bullpen behind him (to say the least) is likely contributing to a lot of runs being charged to him after he’s been lifted.  The guy’s been a horse for several years now and would make a great addition for anyone who can afford him.

In a year when everyone is looking at Cliff Lee, Haren may wind up being nearly the difference maker that Lee is.

It was painful when the A’s let Haren go. But it looks like he’ll be getting into a pennant-chase situation in which whatever team gets him will have done well for themselves. Note that he’s also an excellent hitting pitcher: 1.077 OPS currently.

Haren has been phenomenal actually, he’s just been really, really unlucky. Here’s a good article explain it, (it’s like two weeks old though)

Also worth keeping in mind though that the Diamondbacks will probably be asking a lot as they are not that far away from contending, and they will be wanting teams to trade for the Dan Haren of the last few years, not the Dan Haren of this year, because they know how unlucky he’s been.

I’d love to see this guy in pinstripes. Yes, the “other pinstripes”.

Actually, just 3 of 10 bequeathed runners have scored – about average bullpen support, no?

He looks kinda like Cole Hamels…in a more homeless, stinky kind of way.

    Dear Rubén Amaro, Jr.,
You are an idiot. How freaking stupid do you feel when you realize that you traded Cliff Lee to Seattle, and now, halfway through the next season, you do not even have the prospects to trade to get the guy back? The incompetence you have shown by doing this trade, as well as the incredibly idiotic signings of Gload, Valdez, Castro, and Schnieder, make me wonder how much worse you can do to the Phillies.
You get too much credit for the WS championship. That was the result of major deals by Pat Gillick, as well as the good drafts of Ed Wade(Rollins, Howard, Utley, Hamels, etc.) You walked into the perfect situation and got the credit. When you had a chance to keep Lee and have an historic season, you chose to restock the minor leagues with 3 garbage prospects from Seattle. And now you are going to try to give up prospects for Dan Haren, who is not as good as Cliff Lee? You are seriously starting to almost kinda sorta make me long for the aforementioned Ed Wade.
    Thanks
    Concerned Phillies Fan

I see more of a Jayson Werth on Lincecum’s brownies.
