The Phillies may be interested in Ben Sheets

Jul 7, 2010, 11:10 AM EDT

Jim Salisbury of reports that Phillies’ top scout and Busch Light man Charley
Kerfeld watched Ben Sheets pitch in Oakland on Monday night.  Sailsbury says that the Phillies “appear to have some interest” in Sheets.

The Athletics got Sheets just to flip him anyway, so they’d obviously consider dealing him.  Whether the Phillies want a guy who is 3-8
with a 4.89 ERA and has looked worse than that quite often this season is an open question.  They could use an arm, though, so he’s worth a look.

Personally I don’t want Sheets to go to an NL team because I fear he’d go on a tear in the second half and add about 100,000 gallons of fuel to the “the NL is a minor league” crap we hear all the time and I get real, real tired of that.

    NO! Don’t do it…..

Dan Haren…. Daaaaannnn Harennnnnnn……… That is they want a pretty good pitcher, instead of a Ben Sheets. And Haren can hit.

These deadline trades for Oakland are just a way of keeping the 150 or so remaining fans amused. Sheets has been, shall we say, inconsistent so far this year. The troublesome thing if I’m a Phils fan like Jonny5 is that Sheets is prone to throwing around 87 mph in the first inning. And that isn’t his changeup. So imagine the tiny confines of Phillies Phield and a batting practice pitcher. Still, they could do worse: thy name is Blanton.

We have a guy who throws less than 87 all game long, and his name is Moyer–who happens to be pitching pretty well recently.

Haren’s got a name made for Phightins phans–he’d have Haren’s Harem.

Heyyyy watch it. He’s our Moose, only we can speak badly of him. He’s been off this season, last season he was worth his pay check. This season? well let’s just hope he begins to earn it real quick.

The difference between Sheets @ 87 and Moyer @ 87 is Moyer is effective.
