Joey Votto, Nick Swisher named to All-Star teams

Jul 8, 2010, 7:34 PM EDT

The winners of the Final Vote were announced Thursday as the the Reds’ Joey Votto and the Yankees’ Nick Swisher. Both have won fabulous all expenses-paid trips to beautiful Anaheim, California for a two-day All-Star extravaganza in which they’ll be able to mingle with elite superstars such as Albert Pujols (hold for applause), Alex Rodriguez (ooh, aah) and Omar “The Exterminator” Infante.
It will be the first All-Star appearances for both players. Votto, the current NL leader in OPS, won his vote easily, being singled out on approximately half of the ballots cast in the NL vote.
Swisher’s victory over Kevin Youkilis is being billed as the closest in the vote’s nine-year history. He ranks 12th in the AL in OPS, tied for 15th in homers and 23rd in RBI. That makes him a worthy, if borderline, AL All-Star. He just doesn’t compare to Youkilis, who is currently fourth in the league in OPS and was a far superior player each of the previous two years as well.

Congratulations Joey. Way to celebrate with a home run in your first at bat against the Phils tonight.

Doesn’t compare? Swisher has a bunch of outfield assists and has hit “elite” pitching far better than Youkilis.

If you want to bitch about poor choices, look up Tito’s choice of Varitek. Or when Wakefield, by some rancid act of God, made the cut. Such a blight on the history of the All Star game.

The minute they created teh all-Star game it was a popularity contest. Whether it is the sports writers or the fans doing the voting, people are going to go to the game because they smile nice, come from large markets, or did something spectacular at some point in their careers. I just wish swish would have grown a ‘stache or some other quirky style accessory to garner more votes. GO YANKEES!!!!!!

congrats to swish – nice to know that in this “election”, my vote actually counted for something. certainly a switch from voting here in miami where the crooks in city and county government outnumber the voters.
just hope all of the “all stars” make it through the game with NO – REPEAT NO – injuries.
    GO YANKEES!!!!!
