Did Girardi purposely snub Youkilis from the All-Star Game?

Jul 10, 2010, 10:54 PM EDT

When Twins first baseman Justin Morneau bowed out of next week’s All-Star game due to a mild concussion, many Red Sox fans were hoping that Boston first baseman Kevin Youkilis would be named as his replacement.

After all, Youk finished a close second on MLB’s “Final Vote” ballot to Yankees outfielder Nick Swisher and is plenty deserving of an All-Star nod given the fact that his 987 OPS ranks fifth-best among all major leaguers and his 18 homers and 57 RBI also stand near the top of the league.

Red Sox Nation is up in arms tonight, as White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko was selected to take Morneau’s spot instead.  This according to an MLB.com press release.

Konerko is having a heck of a season, with a .299/.382/.560 batting line, 20 home runs and 63 RBI through 291 at-bats.  He has been a big part of the White Sox’s resurgence in the American League Central and there’s little doubt that he is also deserving of an All-Star nod.

But the fact is Youkilis has been better, and his versatility on the infield might have proven helpful in the later innings of Tuesday’s Midsummer Classic.  Did Yanks skipper Joe Girardi, who is managing the American League squad on Tuesday, snub the Red Sox first baseman on purpose?  Or is he simply a fan of more traditional statistics, like the home run and RBI?  We’re thinking the latter, but, either way, selecting Konerko over Youk was probably a misguided move for the sake of that whole “This One Counts” nonsense.

Wait you didn’t blame the right people!
    1) Let’s blame the players for chosing Ortiz over Youklis.
    2) And don’t forget to blame Morneau for getting injured and making Girardi chose a replacement.
    3) And let’s blame Selig for not stepping in and stopping this injustice.
    4) And last but not least, let’s blame Ellsbury for hurting his ribs and not being on base for Youklis to have more RBI.

The simple solution is that if Boston fans wanted Youkilis in, all they had to do is vote for him more than they did. It’s not like this is a complicated system. It’s a popularity contest. Given that Boston has one of the largest fan bases in the country, it’s hard to take complaints seriously. If more people had voted for him, he would have gotten in. It really is that simple.

That’s the funniest thing I’ve read on HBT all month. Nice job, man. “Play DH.”

Looks like Youklis is having another solid year. Thing is with Konerko, being a White Sox fan and seeing him play every day, he’s been unbelievably valuable to the team this season. Not only are his offensive numbers right there in all categories but he has had a great year at first base. He’s saved the team several runs this year with many solid plays at first. I’m sure that’s hard to believe if you don’t see the W Sox mutch… but it is fact. He truly deserves to be on the team.
Maybe if the Yankee fans hadn’t voted in Swisher (You can easily make a case for Alex Rios over Swish) both Youk and Konerko would be there.
From a purely White Sox perspective though, Konerko was far more deserving than Matt Thorton who made it. Thorton is just plain nasty good but his numbers and contributions aren’t as solid as Konerko’s this season.

Learn how to use a computer fernando. And last but not least this is just an all star ballot who gives a shit both players have made in the past. its not like neither of them are missing there first chance at the big game. they are both deserving. last but not least so what if girardi didnt want a red sox player on the team (not saying this is the case) have you ever heard of competitive spirit. you know the red sox and yankees have something called a rivalry
