Quote of the Day: Charlie Manuel makes no damn sense, but we love him anyway

Jul 12, 2010, 6:15 PM EDT

Warning: even my Charlie Manuel-to-grifter translator was no match for this one.

The reason he’s playing center field is because when we did the fan
voting and the player voting, we uh, Hart, had
the, he was ahead of the outfielders, he has to start, he was supposed
to start the game, and Ethier’s the one I chose to play center field
because I remember he played there a lot. We do not have what they call a
true center fielder right now. We have some our roster, at the same
time that was the reason why he started in center field.

N.L. All-Star Manager Charlie Manuel explaining why Andre Ethier — who hasn’t really ever played center field — is the starting centerfielder for the N.L. All-Star team tomorrow night.  Easy for him to say.

Regular readers know that I often make up fanciful Charlie Manuel quotes that have him talking like some mid-century wise guy. I read through the above quote five times in an effort to make up some more Cholly-isms, but decided that this stood on its own just swell.

Wait- so that’s not you paraphrasing? Those are his actual words? I wonder if that even made sense in his own head.

That’s our Cholly. As long as everything works out, it don’t make no matter how it falls out of his mush, ya see?

It’s because, the entire time he wanted to say, “Dumbasses look at who’s pitching for the NL, Do you really think we’ll need outfielders? Sheeit, we’d be as snug as a bug in a rug with two outfielders.” All the while saying something totally different the whole time. See Cholly aint too swell on talkin’ like no politician. Craig, It’s no secret that the NL has superior pitching on tap for this game. Not to mention the NL sure has plenty of super star talent on hand swinging the bat. Since I love leaving links, here’s something I thought some NL fans would like to read.
